Ruth Lion was the wife of Blue Note founder Alfred Lion, but she was a great deal more than that. She came to New York in 1944 to study singing and quickly became a central figure in the Harlem jazz scene. As Ruth Mason, she became a celebrated jazz duisc jockey on WOV before marrying Lion. At Blue Note, she dove in the label’s operations with a fervor, becoming office manager and handling publicity, artist relations and whatever else Alfred and Francis Wolff needed her for, including being a model for album covers like „Moods“ by the Three Sounds. She was a strong, gentle woman and her marriage to Alfred was a wonderful thing to behold. Ruth died of natural causes on Friday, May 20, 2011 in Las Vegas at the age of 87 after several years of ill health. She was cremated and heer ashes sit in Detroit where she grew up and most of her extended family still lives. She is survived by daughters Arlette and Frances.
Und wie gesagt, ich nähere mich den Three Sounds allmählich an, das geht aber schon 10 Jahre oder so … zuletzt gehörte habe ich ein paar ihrer Alben wohl, als wir im Frühling 2021 alle viel Blue Note hörten. Seither kamen noch ein oder zwei BN-CDs dazu, aber richtig vertieft habe ich das alles nie.
