Und ein größer brennendes Haus (ich meine die Flammenbilder) habe ich noch nicht gesehen. Ich habe es noch einmal nachgelesen, weil mich meine Erinnerung nicht trügen sollte. Tarkowskij hat das Haus noch einmal aufbauen lassen, weil der erste Brand ihm nicht genügt hatte. Und erst da dürfen mir gerne die Kunstverständigen in den Zeitungen erklären, warum in „Nostalghia“ das Wasser so wichtig ist und in „Offret“ das Feuer.

The 6 minute 50 second „house-burning“ shot has acquired almost mythical status because of the disaster that occurred in the original filming of it. Tarkovsky insisted on shooting it in one take, with only one camera carrying out the complicated tracking movements, despite Sven Nykvist’s protests; a back-up camera was available but was not mounted on rails. Halfway through the shot the camera began to lose speed and had to be replaced by the back-up camera; though the shot was completed, it was no longer the single, continuous movement that Tarkovsky had his heart set on. His distress was so evident that the cast and crew arranged to have the exterior of the house rebuilt, and the scene was reshot two weeks later, now using two cameras running parallel to each other.

Zumindest den betreffenden Ausschnitt aus der Doku habe ich mal gesehen … total irre! Dass Johnnson/Petrie direkt im Anschluss an die zitierte Passage meinen, es sei an der Stelle offensichtlich, dass die Kamera-Bewegungen für Tarkovsky an dem Punkt „an end in itself […] rather than a means to an end“ geworden seien, finde ich nicht völlig an den Haaren herbeigezogen.
Zu E.T.A. Hoffmann steht in dem Band leider nichts (oder er ging im Index vergessen, ich habe das Buch nie komplett gelesen).
