Das mit Donald Bailey und Paul Motian finde ich einen sehr spannenden Gedanken… den ich so direkt noch nie hatte. Ohne da grad konkret was im Ohr zu haben, leuchtet mir das aber durchaus ein – einfach unbedingt mit der Qualifizierung „Motian before Motian“ (Bailey war 1960 „fertig“, Motian noch nicht so wirklich, und „mad“ – bzw. wie ich jeweils eher schreibe „nutty“, s.u. – war er eben auch noch nicht so sehr in seiner Zeit mit Evans, das kam erst etwas später richtig zum Tragen).
In seinem superben Text über Donald Bailey spricht Ethan Iverson vom „orîginal mad drummer, Sonny Greer“ und schreibt später: “ I love the clunky drummers: Frankie Dunlop, Ed Blackwell, Paul Motian, Tootie Heath, the cats who play some sparse, corny stuff on the snare a bit too loud and look over, daring you to make something of it.“
