„The Concerts“ wäre wohl die Jimmy Witherspoon-CD, die ich auf die Insel mitnehmen würde. Jazz ist das nicht, das ist Blues, aber die Bands sind einfach grandios und Witherspoon in bester Form. Die erste LP auf dem Twofer ist „Witherspoon, Mulligan, Webster at the Renaissance“ (live im Dezember 1959, Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinnegar und Mel Lewis sind auch noch dabei), die zweite „Jimmy Witherspoon at Monterey“ vom Oktober 1959 mit Roy Eldridge, Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Woody Herman (nur Klarinette), Earl Hines, Vernon Alley und Mel Lewis. Beide LPs kamen auf Hifijazz heraus, und 1972 erstmals LP-Twofer bei Fantasy (2002 dann wieder auf CD). Produziert hat das damals David Axelrod.
