Vorhin vergessen, dass auch noch das Gershwin-Album vom Vienna Art Orchestra am Nachmittag erstmals lief … ein durchwachsenes Album, das ich nun aber doch noch haben wollte, nachdem ich neulich wegen der Hancock-Umfrage auch dessen Hommage aus dem Gershwin-Jahr angeschafft hatte. „Rhapsody in Blue“ für Gitarre (Wolfgang Muthspiel) und der erste Satz des Klavierkonzerts für Vibraphon (Franck Tortiller) umrahmen sechs Songs, die der Reihe nach von Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, T.S. Monk, Monica Zetterlund, Ray Anderson, Anna Lauvergnac und Shirley Horn interpretiert werden – eigentlich gesungen. Anderson spielt auch Posaune, T.S. Monk bietet eher Sprechgesang als Gesang, und Lovano singt halt mit seinem Horn.
Der Höhepunkt ist das letzte der sechs Stücke, „Someone to Watch Over Me“ von Shirley Horn (mit Al McKibbon, der im Booklet „Al Kibbon“ heisst und Steve Williams). Dazu im Booklet:
Vienna, February 23. The tape of the Shirley Horn trio reaches the studio. The recording days are long ones … it’s 1:30 in the morning, everybody is excited and exhausted too; it’s 1:30 in the morning and the tape starts running. There’s something unreal in the silence that surrounds the music. Not one movement, as if everybody even stopped breathing. Five minutes and fifty seconds of total stillness. As the echo of the last note fades away, the silence in the control room is so intense that it recalls the spell of an old fairy tale. Slowly, reality comes back again. Someone asks Mathias Rüegg how he will arrange the song; the answer: „It’s untouchable.“ There’s a profound silence in the studio. It’s the 23rd of February, 1:30 in the morning, and once again Miss Shirley Horn has brought tears to the eyes of her listeners and warmth to their hearts.
