Runde 4 mit dem Quartet West, das „Big Sleep“-Album – auf wieder git es Schnipsel aus Filmtonspuren (Intro aus „The Big Sleep“ mit Fanfare und dem ersten Dialog des Films, Outro mit den letzten Sätzen aus dem Film), dazwischen montiert Aufnahmen von Coleman Hawkins („My Love and I“ von Raskin/Mercer aus dem Film „Apache“, zuerst vom QW mit von Broadbent arrangierten Streichern, dann eine Minute Hawkins zum Ausklang), an ein Bass-Solo von Haden montiert Jo Stafford mit „Alone Together“ (ohne direkten Filmbezug), Django Reinhardt und Stéphane Grappelli mit „Où es-tu, mon amour?“, das als Montage von Alt und Neu in einer lange Version zu hören ist – und auch in der neuen Version ist Grappelli als Gast dabei, Duke Ellington („Low Key Lightly“ von „Anatomy of Murder“ – Haden meint in den Liner Notes, das Geigensolo von Ray Nance sei „one of the great jazz solos of all time“) und Chet Baker („Everything Happens to Me“ in der Pariser-Version mit Raymond Fol, wieder montiert mit dem QW und Streichern arr. Broadbent). Vom Quartet West gibt dreimal Haden, zweimal Broadbent, Bird („Relaxin‘ at Camarillo“), Bud Powell („Celia“) und Warne Marsh („Background Music“). Das ist schon sehr, sehr gut gemacht … Album Nr. 2 ist vielleicht mein liebstes, wenn es einfach ums Playing geht, um das Kern-Quartett, und das hier ist wohl mein liebstes Montage-Album.
