Something for us to listen to while we lay on the beach in some secluded, tropical paradise.“ I smiled my agreement, and put the last sweet finishing touches on another romantic soul ballad. Until then, slip into something comfortable, make yourself a cool drink, turn down the lights, and put on Night-glo. It’s a tribute to my beautiful rhythm section, and in particular, Steve Swallow. And besides, who says that designing an entire, fully orchestrated album around your bass player isn’t making musical history?

[…] Zur Zeit von Night-glo bewegte sich Carla Bleys Konzeption in Richtung einer von jeglicher Dramatik entschlackten, linearen Musik. Das Album präsentiert eine ruhige Musik auf einem emotional eher kühlen Niveau. Zu einer Rhythmusgruppe mit Carla Bley (Orgel und Synthesizer), Larry Willis (Piano und E-Piano), Hiram Bullock (Gitarre), Steve Swallow (Bass), Victor Lewis (Schlagzeug) und Manolo Badrena (Perkussion) kommt ein fünfköpfiger Bläsersatz mit Paul McCandless, Randy Brecker, John Clark, Tom Malone und David Taylor. Mit dieser Small-Bigband realisiert Carla Bley ihre kompositorischen Ideen, die der Improvisation relativ wenig Raum offenlassen, deren Klangsprache aber immer noch diese faszinierende Mischung aus Witz und Melancholie aufweist.
