HERBIE HANCOCK – The New Standard (Verve, 1996)
Meist bin ich kein großer Freund von Jazzalben, die sich Popsongs widmen, besonders wenn Beatles-Songs enthalten sind, das Ergebnis ist meistens nicht besonders gut. Anders auf The New Standard, denn dort dient das Ausgangsmaterial nur als grobes Gerüst, als Skizze, denn es bleibt innerhalb der Interpretationen recht viel Freiraum. Die Band ist tight und Guy Eckstines Produktion klingt auch heute noch toll. Insgesamt ein Album, das ich heute lieber mag, als damals.
