1989/90 angefangen mit jazzhören, fließender übergang: prince, graffiti bridge & miles davis, aura gleichzeitig gekauft…
durch meinen vater brubeck, mehr eigentlich nicht, hat „alles ab miles davis nicht mehr verstanden“, umso mehr grund, genau dort anzufangen.
ein schulfreund macht mit, zusammen durch die CBS BOX von miles, er entdeckt aber parallel schon branford marsalis (ging natürlich auch gut vom pop aus, über die blue turtles von sting). klassischer-gitarren-unterricht bei einem nur 5 jahre älteren lehrer, zusammen schnell zu neuer musik, auch als duo, auch improvisierend (allein, elektrisch später mal ein paar tapes vollgespielt mit einem portugiesischen brüderpaar auf einer punk/dub-schnittstelle, das war aber schon meine derek-bailey-phase) – jedenfalls kam der vom blues-rock über james blood ulmer zum jazz, hatte miles in rotterdam live gesehen, sehr viel vinyl, auch schon steve coleman, ständiger austausch… und dann (1991) starb miles…
klassischen jazz habe ich dann über die naheliegenden großen achsen miles – trane – ornette – mingus – dolphy – monk (hat nicht so gut funktioniert) retrospektiv verfolgt (und dann erst in den nullern vertieft). aktueller jazz vor allem aus dem radio (wdr, lippegaus & rüsenberg) und live. erstes festival (unna, das letzte, 1990?) shepp/van’t hoff, brötzmann/mangelsdorff/shannon jackson, jamaaladeen tacuma, cecil taylor an einem abend. danach (1993/94) mal 1 tag leverkusen, trompetertag, maynard ferguson/graham haynes/lester bowie nacheinander, total in haynes verliebt… oft moers, dort david murray, aber auch die loft-szene morgens… regelmäßig ins domicil, dortmund: steve coleman, david murray, carlos ward, don byron, yosuke yamashita, peter kowald, doug hammond waren die highlights. in berlin mal rashied ali (mit der prima-materia-band) und tony lakatos mit al foster & kirk lightsey (gähn). ganz großartig am ende (1999) abbey lincoln (mit marc cary, dortmund), danach eigentlich erst vocal jazz für mich entdeckt (hatte auch mit verlieben/beziehung zu tun).
aktuell also alles eher über m-base erschlossen (genauer: dave holland quartet, dann coleman), der rest kam über’s radio. und über die stadtbücherei bochum
