People can look back on ELP now and be critical, but there was nothing wishy-washy about them. To a 16 year old, live they were aggressive and really exciting. I’ve never been partisan in my interest in bands, and when you’re growing up in Deptford, it’s almost all the same to you: it’s exciting stuff that’s not made in Deptford! As a teenager I was very open, so I could honestly say that in the mid-70s my favourite bands were The Who, ELP, Little Feat, Roxy, Bowie. When you’re growing up in a working class area you want to escape somehow, and before punk came there were other ways to escape, like going to a gig on a Saturday night, buying the records and having your dad saying, ‘Turn that bloody racket down’.
Das ist sicher zutreffend. Das „Canceln“ der „Rock Dinos“ durch die Punks war ja eher ein revolutionärer Gestus als tief in den Hörerbiographien verwurzelt.
