Hier ein paar Zitate die verdeutlichen, dass “Born In The USA”, nicht nur das Album bzw. der Titelsong, im damaligen Amerika verschiedenartig aufgefasst wurden. Die Tatsache, dass Springsteen das oft missverstandene Woody Guthrie Stück “This Land Is Your Land” live spielte, tat sein Übriges. Oder man könnte sagen, es war ungeschickt aus künstlerischer Sicht und sehr geschickt aus geschäftlichem Blickwinkel. Bei der Ansage zum Song nuschelte er zwar von einem eigentlich “angry song” als Antwort auf das patriotische “God Bless America” Irving Berlin’s. Doch den von kurzen kritischen Bemerkungen nahm wohl kaum jemand Notiz, zumal die Worte und Melodie als Lobgesang auf America aufgefasst wurden. Das hört man an den Reaktionen aus dem Publikum. Und durch die minimalistisch Instrumentierung gab es einen schönen Nachhall der einzelnen Worte in den Stadien.

Die letzen Verse wurden nicht live gespielt:
As I went walking I saw a sign there,

And helping you make those dreams come true is what this job of mine is all about.” Ronald Reagan, at a campaign stop in Hammonton, New Jersey, September 19, 1984, during the 1984 presidential campaign.
”Clearly the key to the enormous explosion of Bruce’s popularity is the misunderstanding [of “Born In The U.S.A.”]. He is a tribute to the fact that people hear what they want.” Music critic Greil Marcus during the peak of Springsteen’s popularity.
Und auf Greil Marcus bezogen, kann man hinzufügen, dass dies durch den bewusst gesetzten Kontrast der Musik (martialische Stadion Hymne) auch provoziert wurde. Gegen Reagan ist Springsteen ja gerichtlich vorgegangen und hat ihm verboten den Song auf Wahlkampfveranstaltungen zu spielen. Dennoch versuchte Reagan mit der Popularität Springsteens zu punkten. Mit der ursprünglichen Version des Titelstücks wäre die Karriere von Springsteen etwas langsamer gelaufen und Reagan wäre nicht auf die Idee gekommen den Song zu verwenden.
