Und da ist dann so ganz beiläufig so ein Mobley-Tune wie „Gettin‘ and Jettin'“ drauf – bei dem ich irritiert gucke, was für ein Cover das nun ist … Cuscuna beschreibt es als „a Miles-ish kind of A-A-B-A tune. Mobley’s imagination is in high gear through 8 beautiful choruses. Listen to just his first and last choruses, one right after the other; this is a perfect example of his extraordinary continuity of thought. In the bridge of his second and third choruses, he playfully hints at the grandstanding style of gutbucket tenor and then fully lets go with his own interpretation of the genre by the fourth chorus.“
Meisterhaft!
Ein paar Abschnitte vor der „extraordinary continuity of thought“ hatte Cuscuna bei der Beschreibung des Openers „Out of Joe’s Bag“ schon den zugehörigen Namen eingeworfen: „Like those long, labyrinth sentences of James Joyce’s, missing the slightest phrase can detract from grasping the whole thought.“
Der Joe, um den es geht in dem Stück, ist natürlich Philly Joe, der Drummer … und was der nun in „Hank’s Other Soul“, dem ersten der beiden langen Stücke, die zusammen mit knapp 17 Minuten doch für eine B-Seite ausgereicht hätten, erinnert mich dann wieder an das „corny“ aus der Bailey-Ecke … schon eine coole Socke, Philly Joe – hier noch das Foto aus dem Innern der RVG-CD-Ausgabe (in neuem Tab öffnen, dann wird es grösser):
