PRINCE – „1999“ (Super Deluxe Edition) (z.B.: 5CD+DVD) [29.11.2019]

On November 29, The Prince Estate, in association with Warner Records, will celebrate Prince’s 1982 classic 1999 with a multi-format reissue encompassing the following versions:

  • Super Deluxe Edition (5CD+DVD or 10LP+DVD / audio-only download and streaming)
  • Deluxe Edition (2CD or 4LP 180g vinyl / download and streaming)
  • Remastered album (1CD or 2LP 180g Purple Vinyl / download and streaming)

Prince’s fifth studio album and first to feature an embryonic version of The Revolution, 1999 was a major breakthrough for the artist. “1999,” “Little Red Corvette,” and “Delirious” – the first three songs on Side One of the original double vinyl – all became major crossover hits on the pop and R&B charts, earning Prince heavy rotation on the burgeoning MTV.

Yet the eleven songs that comprised 1999 were just the tip of the iceberg for the prolific artist-songwriter-producer. During 1981 and 1982, he demoed tracks for Vanity 6 and The Time, not to mention dozens of tracks that went unheard. The Super Deluxe Edition of 1999 will premiere 35 previously unreleased tracks. Its 65 tracks total across five CDs or ten 180-gram vinyl LPs will also include B-sides and single mixes plus the original album remastered for the very first time. It features all of the audio material Prince officially released in and around 1982 plus 23 previously unissued studio tracks recorded between November 1981 and January 1983, plus a complete live performance of the 1999 tour recorded in Detroit at the late show on November 30, 1982. Additionally, both the CD and vinyl Super Deluxe sets contain a DVD with another complete, previously unreleased concert from the 1999 tour, recorded with multiple cameras live at the Houston Summit on December 29, 1982.

The Super Deluxe Edition boasts new liner notes by journalist David Fricke, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Minneapolis radio host Andrea Swensson, and Prince historian Duane Tudahl. It’s packaged with a replica of Prince’s handwritten lyrics for several songs from the era, including “Little Red Corvette,” plus images of the master tapes and rare photography from Prince’s then-photographer, Allen Beaulieu. Fricke writes in his essay that the set represents “a landmark collection of vision, craft, and urgency – an unprecedented immersion in the frenetic momentum and private working world of Prince in 1981 and 1982, en route to the profound breakthrough of his fifth studio album, 1999.”

The 2-CD or 4-LP iterations have the remastered original album plus the B-sides and alternate mixes disc, while the 1-CD or 2-LP version has the new remaster only. All versions will be available on November 29 from Warner Records and The Prince Estate.
