Trivia: Newton war einer der Lieblingsmusiker des marxistischen Historikers und Jazzfans Eric Hobsbawm. Das Pseudonym, unter dem er seine Jazzkritiker ebenso wie ihre Sammlung im Band „The Jazz Scene“ (1959) veröffentlichte, lautet Francis Newton.
