2. Alan Vega – Bye Bye Bayou
Vegas Brooklyn Baby ist gefangen im gleichen amerikanischen Albtraum wie Springsteens nighthawk und es hat auch schon eine düstere Vorahnung, als es zur Einberufung kommt. Und das völlig zu recht. Mit einem one-way ticket geht es nach Vietnam.
I’m gonna be a hero.
Ein Vorhaben, das am Ende in Schutt und Asche liegt, zerbombt und zerschossen.
Ja, er kehrt zurück, allerdings Im Sarg.
I never had a chance. Unknown hero.
Anstelle eines Gitarren-Solos bleibt nur ein Urschrei.
Vega selbst, Jahrgang 1938, pflegte sehr lange das Image gleichfalls ein Vietnam-Veteran zu sein. Was allerdings schlicht geflunkert war. Wie er der Einberufung entkam, bzw. ausgemustert wurde? Na, auf die knallharte Tour…
„I walked into the induction center and said, ‚Okay, give me a gun, I wanna fight, I wanna kill! Give me a gun, I WANNA KILL!‘ They were like, ‚We don’t want this cat‘. It took me three attempts to get out of it, but they were convinced that I was crazy. I got my 4F and was deemed insane.“
Damit marschierte er in schließlich auf den Protest-Märschen mit:
„We went on the anti-war demos. New York and Washington – that one was pretty bad, they threw rocks at us, the cops were charging and beating the shit out of us, all kinds of shit.“
…und aus diesem shit erwuchs dann der Sound der frühen Suicide und der stetige Grundton in Vegas musikalischem Schaffen allgemein. Sein musikalische Partner Martin Rev ergänzt:
„Vietnam was a very significant ingredient that gave everything such an extra added intensity. [We] were really on the edge, getting more and more intense as Vietnam was eating everything up as the backdrop of it all. We didn’t see ourselves as a specifically anti-war band, although we were as individuals. It was very obvious from what we did that we were not happy. As a musician, I’d long been involved in that kind of intensity, all the way back from when I was a kid.“
