12. Randy Weston – The Woman (feat. Jayne Cortez) (Randy Weston–Jayne Cortez)

Aufgenommen live 2012 an einem grossen Konzert von Randy Weston (der hier am Klavier zu hören ist). Man verzeihe mir, dass ich das Gedicht von Jayne Cortez (1934–2012) nicht transkribiert habe. Cortez war von 1954 bis 1964 mit Ornette Coleman verheiratet und ist die Mutter von Denardo Coleman, der sehr jung mit seinem Vater Platten aufnahm. Cortez wuchs in Watts auf und wurde zu einer wichtigen Aktivistin und einer gewichtigen Stimme des Black Arts Movement. In Margalit Fox’ Nachruf aus der New York Times liest man folgende Zeilen:
As performed, Ms. Cortez’s poems were not so much set to music as they were a part of the music. They were chanted more than recited, employing carefully calibrated repetitions, shifts in tempo and modulations of vocal tone.
It was as if her verse, which often took on large, painful subjects like racism and misogyny, had become an instrument itself — an instrument, Ms. Cortez felt strongly, to be wielded in the service of social change.
