In der Nacht vom 21. Auf den 22. Juni 1964 (Simones Song bezieht sich nicht darauf) wurden in Neshoba County; Mississippi, drei Bürgerrechtsaktivisten entführt und ermordet – sie arbeiteten daran, im Süden der USA afro-amerikanische Bürger für die Wahlen zu registrieren. An ihrer Ermordung waren nicht nur Mitglieder des Ku-Klux-Klan beteiligt sondern auch das örtliche Sheriff’s Office und die Polizei von Philadelphia, Mississippi. Lyndon B. Johnson musste Druck auf J. Edgar Hoover ausüben, damit das FBI den Mordfall überhaupt untersuchte. Die Empörung über den Tod der drei Aktivisten half ebenso wie andere Aufstände der Bürgerrechtsbewegung, den Civil Rights Act of 1964 durchzusetzen. Dieser verbietet Diskriminierung aufgrund von Rasse, Hautfarbe, Religion, Geschlecht oder nationaler Zugehörigkeit.
Einer der Täter wurde 2005 zu 60 Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt, Barack Obama verlieh den drei Opfern 2014 postum die Presidential Medal of Freedom, 2016 wurde der Fall offiziell zu den Akten gelegt.
Es gibt diverse filmische und musikalische Werke, die sich auf die „Mississippi civil rights workers’ murders“ beziehen, so stützt sich z.B. der Film „Mississippi Burning“ (mit Willem Dafoe und Gene Hackman) lose auf die Ereignisse in Neshoba County, Mimi und Richard Farina, Pete Seeger oder Phil Ochs schrieben Songs, die sich auf diese Ereignisse bezogen.
