Ein Schallplattencover als politisches Statement – hinter dem kurzlebigen aber legendären Label Candid Records stand der Musikkritiker und Aktivist Nat Hentoff, der auch die Liner Notes schrieb.
„FREEDOM DAY […] communicates the vibrant expectancy and wonderment and nagging disbelief in the period immediately following the Emancipation Proclamation [am 1. Januar 1863 von Präsident Lincoln erlassen]. The song, particularly in Abbey Lincoln’s surging performance, projects a bursting impatience.“
Noch zwanzig Jahre später, als Columbia das Album in der „Contemporary Masters Series“ neu auflegte, war das ursprüngliche Cover zu harte Kost – man ersetzte es mit einem hübschen Photo von Roach, der sich in Interviews darüber sehr erzürnt zeigte.
