gypsy-tail-windDanke, die Carroll werde ich holen … bei Don Ellis sind hoffentlich die ganzen Bonustracks dabei? Bleibt vermutlich mein Lieblingsalbum von ihm (was aber biographische Gründe hat, also: das erste der Big Band, das ich entdeckte … „Electric Bath“ ist vermutlich das andere ganz oben bei mir, aber ich hab die alle länger nicht angehört).
Kann ich jetzt nicht sagen ….aufgrund der letzten japanischen Ausgabe vor über einer Dekade würde ich die „Gefährdung“ in Richtung Originaltracks sehe …. aber jedenfalls dafür hier eine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung meinerseits (nämlich viel besser als gar nix) ….

WerbungIst jedenfalls eine der krasseren Serien aus Japan … da Universal jetzt ja über diverse klassische Jazzlabels verfügt, ist da nicht nur vieles von Verve drin, sondern auch Blue Note, Capitol, Pacific usw. … von den bereits erschienenen hatte ich die zwei von Moacir Santos vorbestellt (das dritte hatte ich nicht gesichtet und anderswo ein etwas älteres Reissue aufgetrieben) … da sind z.B. die schönen ersten Capitol-Alben von Cannonball Adderley wieder dabei, aber auch Sachen wie „Silver ’n …“ von Horace Silver. Wird wohl ein teurer Spass, zumal da auch so manches drin ist, was ich bisher nur von spanischen Piraten habe (z.B. das Getz-Album mit Mose Allison).

Erik van Lier habe ich bereits). Die Ineke mit den Tenorsaxern sieht ebenfalls gut aus.
Von den Blue Jack fehlt mir noch Geller/de Graaf, die finde ich schon auch verlockend (und ein oder zwei andere, die mich aber weniger interessieren, was sicher auch mit meiner schlechten Kenntnis der Szene zu tun hat, die Brink/Rochlin „Where or When“ müsste ich mir wohl überlegen?).das hier hatt ich gar nicht gelesen… Brink/Rochlin ist mE super, Geller/de Graaff muss ich mal wieder hoeren, die war mir bislang tendentiell ein bisschen hektisch…

Von Webster meinte ich die „Wayfaring Webster“, nicht die „Then and Now“ von Cees Slinger, auf der Webster nur zur Hälfte spielt (davon habe ich schon die reguläre Ausgabe von Challenge).

Wobei die Art von Programm mich eher erschlägt – zuviel aufs Mal und sehr bunt, von Astrud Gilberto auf Capitol über BN-Klassiker bis hin zu den Sachen, als BN in den letzten Zügen lag (die späten Gene Harris-Alben, die erwähnten „Silver & …“ – die Carroll gehört ja auch in die Kategorie, die von Moacir Santos auch, gibt da schon Dinge, die mich interessieren) … scheint mir ziemlich planlos das Ganze. Aber gut, muss man halt bei Interesse alles durchgucken
In den Katalognummern drunter finden sich übrigens diverse Kenny Burrell-Reissues für 1500 Yen (Blue Note, Argo, Verve) – da muss ich auch noch genauer hinschauen. Eine sehr schöne Sache wäre, wenn es vom Live-Album „A Night at the Village Vanguard“ mal noch mehr Material gäbe … oder auch nur ein sauberes Reissue, das die zwei Bonustracks der 90er-CDs wiederherstellt).

A Morgan solo always made you sit up and take notice. Dramatic, dynamic and ambitious, his tone was big and brash on finger-popping, uptempo numbers, yet warm and tender on ballads. Trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas wrote to me in an email about Morgan, “ Horace Silver pointed out to me the supreme hipness of Lee Morgan’s voice, not what he plays over one chord, but how he gets from one to the next.” Morgan was always willing to take risks, bending notes and adding variations to the themes. There was an urgency to his music.
In the years following “The Sidewinder,” Morgan continued to make stellar recordings, most built either on the cool grooves of “The Sidewinder” or on the Blakey sound. But one album, “Search for the New Land” (Blue Note, 1966), showed another side emerging. It presented extended compositions and a probing, introspective side of the trumpeter. On the “Lighthouse” sides, Morgan mixes all three of these styles effectively. His band—which included reedman Bennie Maupin, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Mickey Roker —played nightly sets at the venue for a week and a half before the recording began, so the musicians had an unusually high level of rapport with each other and a comfort with the acoustics of the venue. (Even weeklong engagements are now considered long.)
The rendition of “The Sidewinder” on “The Complete Live at The Lighthouse” sounds more exuberant than obligatory, and it feels like a gleeful nod to the ’60s, while much of the other material points to the future. Led by Roker’s frenetic drumming, Mabern’s “The Beehive” roars with intensity and gusto, and it bridges the gap between the hard bop of the ’60s and the longer solos and more open structures that were a trademark of some ’70s jazz. Mr. Maupin’s contributions to the repertoire, especially “416 East 10th Street” and “Neophilia,” also present a wide-open sound. There are three versions of the latter composition, one from each of the three nights of the recording, and the solos grow in intensity. Merritt’s “Nommo” would soon become a signature for the Max Roach Quartet, a band that typified the ’70s post-bop style, and his “Absolutions,” a rarity, spotlights the band’s tight interplay. Morgan’s brief career was slowed by addiction, and he didn’t shy away from his past. The band used his composition “Speedball,” which is also a blend of heroin and cocaine, as an outro theme, but one of the highlights of the box is a full-length rendition featuring drummer Jack DeJohnette. His playing is looser than Roker’s and it pushes the band in many directions.

Lee Morgan – The Complete Live at The LighthouseDie hab ich heute gekriegt – in der CD-Version versteht sich. Und auch die ist sehr, sehr toll aufgemacht. Doppel-CD-Hüllen mit je einem der Fotos vom „Last Session“-Cover-Shoot hinten und CD-Hüllen plus Booklet vorn und hinten mit je einem Foto vom Strand-Shooting. Im Booklet, das vernünftige Dimensionen hat (66 Seiten) längere Interviews mit Bennie Maupin und Jymie Merritt (letzteres zwei Monate vor dem Tod von seinem Sohn geführt), dazu ein längerer Text von Jeffrey S. MacMillan, ein paar Vorworte (Was, Feldman, David Weiss, Cuscuna etc.), Erinnerungen an Mabern und an Roker, Testimonials von DeJohnette (der auf einem der Stücke ja mitspielt – leider ist da auch in der Box nicht mehr, es war halt wirklich nur dieses eine), Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Jaimie Branch, Wallace Roney usw. – und natürlich viele weitere Fotos. Wirklich sehr, sehr schön gemacht und ohne den Overkill, den Feldman bei Resonance gerne mal bietet.

Ich habe von dem Label noch nie gehört und kann das überhaupt nicht einschätzen (und drüben bei Org gibt es dazu nichts oder ich bin zu doof es zu finden):
