von: Empyrean Isles (CD: The Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions, 1998)Den Auftakt macht Herbie Hancocks „Cantaloupe Island“. Das Stück wurde in den Neunzigern richtig gross, als Us3 es in ihrem Megahit „Cantaloop“ sampelten. Eine simple, sechzehntaktige Struktur mit süffigen Changes, einem funky Ostinato, das Hancock über die volle Länge durchzieht und das für die Erdung sorgt; Freddie Hubbard hat vor dem Hintergrund ein leichtes Spiel in seinem Solo funky zu klingen, während Ron Carter und Tony Williams für einen leichten aber erdigen Beat sorgen.
