Stick In The Wheel – From Here

Das Album hab ich bestellt; ich bin gespannt! Mike Harding hat vor kurzem „Seven Gypsies“ gespielt, da habe ich mich an die Band erinnert – die waren letztes Jahr auf dem Cover von fRoots, wegen der Bones EP. Was ich bisher gehört habe, gefällt mir sehr: frisch und dringlich!

Colin IrwinStick In The Wheel’s first album is one of those records you can’t really ignore. … Drenched in attitude and intent, they make good their loudly trumpeted manifesto… “We play the music of our people. We sing in our own accents. We record in our kitchens and living rooms. This is our culture, our tradition.”

It’s not always pretty – in fact it’s never pretty – but Nicola Kearey’s confrontational vocal style certainly makes you look upon these mostly well-known traditional songs anew. … It’s this vivid sense of reality which applies such a genuine vitality and urgency to familiar old songs (the frenzy engendered on Bows Of London is immense) that makes this such a compelling album. In Kearey’s hands, the defeated sadness and resignation usually offered on The Blacksmith suddenly sounds like a bitter call for revenge; the feigned madness of the various vagrants, outsiders and mental patients incarcerated in the famous London asylum is all too believable on this frenetic take on Bedlam; and their very real rawness not only attaches a genuine sense of despair and helplessness to Hard Times Of Old England, it makes the old Copper Family favourite firmly relevant today. A relevance emphatically underlined when they follow it with their thoroughly modern morality tale Me N Becky, inspired by the London riots.

Despite the stripped-down starkness, it’s not devoid of subtlety or technical prowess. Sparing they may be, but Ian Carter’s sensitive accompaniments on dobro and guitar bring plenty to the party, as does Fran Foote’s gorgeous harmony singing. Some earnest percussion and astute use of handclaps add to the overall impact of an album which, despite – or maybe because of – its apparent simplicity strikes well-aimed and far-reaching blows to our perceptions about traditional song.

Von den hier zu hörenden Tracks bin ich auch schwerst beeindruckt. Zuerst empfand ich Keareys Stimme noch als etwas abweisend, das hat sich gelegt, mehr als das. Ihr Gesang ist durchdringend intensiv, bei „Who knows“ wahrlich majestätisch und musikalisch bildet sich ein reich geschmückter, mystischer Saum. Ein wenig Folk, ein wenig psychedelische Verdichtung, ein wenig harsch, ein wenig dröhnend und dunkel, auf seltsame und gute Weise „alt“ und zeitlos, aber ohne ein Gramm Staub – füllt mir wunderbar die Lücke bis zum nächsten Big blood Album. Von Stick In The Wheel wäre ich jetzt nicht unbedingt auf Big Blood gekommen. Interessant, allerdings bin etwas erschlagen von ihrem Output. Ich hatte eins oder zwei Alben erwartet. Aber ich werde sie im Auge behalten. In den letzter Zeit bin kaum dazu gekommen meine neue Alben zu hören.

Konnte sich noch jemand erwärmen für das hervorragende Album „From Here“?

Ich habe das Album leider immernoch nicht gehört, ärgert mich jedes Mal, wenn es aktuell in einer Liste auftaucht. Nungut.

Ad BB: Die Verbindungen sind vielleicht nicht allzu offensichtlich, im Rückblick auf deren Gesamtwerk höre ich aber doch recht klare Parallelen (speziell bei „Who knows“). Was ihr Werk betrifft: Das ist enorm umfangreich, ja, aber das Lohnendste, was man entdecken kann. Für mutige Ohren gibt es genug Möglichkeiten, die meisten Releases gibt es ja unlängst nicht mehr physisch, dafür ist der Output fast in Gänze etwa hier zu finden.
