Stick In The Wheel’s highly anticipated debut album From Here is a raw, fresh take on English Folk music. Their now-trademark abrasive delivery of both original and traditional tracks, is not bland retroism, or empty nostalgia, but a voice linking now to then.
Addressing issues that still have relevance today, re-visiting traditions long-lost, as well as those disappearing right before us, in a way that has more in common with Sleaford Mods than with Bellowhead. A thousand miles away from waistcoats and wistful ladies, the songs are roughed up down dark alleys with lyrics that are direct, honest, and caustic, but also eloquently poetic. The band is spearheaded by Nicola Kearey’s fierce uncompromising vocal delivery, accompanied by Fran Foote’s harmony vocal and underpinned by sparse taut arrangements.
From Here follows a handful of acclaimed EPs and a recent Static Caravan 7″, as well as BBC6Music and Xfm sessions and two BBC Folk Award nominations.
Stripped back to their bare components, the songs speak for themselves without ornament.
These are aggressive and intentionally raw recordings, cobbled together in warehouses, kitchens, and wherever they can, telling tales of everyday life: carboot-swindlers, lorry drivers and London rioters, sitting seamlessly against traditional songs of prisons, hammer-wielding blacksmiths and 18th century madhouses. It’s not about genres or labels anymore, it’s about standing up and being counted. From Here is an important cornerstone in England’s musical lineage, with a proud rallying cry that’s impossible to ignore.

Bright Young Folk
Folk Radio UKThomas BlakeThis is high-energy, politically switched-on folk music and it is one of the most vital recent additions to the English musical tradition.
Colin IrwinStick In The Wheel’s first album is one of those records you can’t really ignore. … Drenched in attitude and intent, they make good their loudly trumpeted manifesto… “We play the music of our people. We sing in our own accents. We record in our kitchens and living rooms. This is our culture, our tradition.”
It’s not always pretty – in fact it’s never pretty – but Nicola Kearey’s confrontational vocal style certainly makes you look upon these mostly well-known traditional songs anew. … It’s this vivid sense of reality which applies such a genuine vitality and urgency to familiar old songs (the frenzy engendered on Bows Of London is immense) that makes this such a compelling album. In Kearey’s hands, the defeated sadness and resignation usually offered on The Blacksmith suddenly sounds like a bitter call for revenge; the feigned madness of the various vagrants, outsiders and mental patients incarcerated in the famous London asylum is all too believable on this frenetic take on Bedlam; and their very real rawness not only attaches a genuine sense of despair and helplessness to Hard Times Of Old England, it makes the old Copper Family favourite firmly relevant today. A relevance emphatically underlined when they follow it with their thoroughly modern morality tale Me N Becky, inspired by the London riots.
Despite the stripped-down starkness, it’s not devoid of subtlety or technical prowess. Sparing they may be, but Ian Carter’s sensitive accompaniments on dobro and guitar bring plenty to the party, as does Fran Foote’s gorgeous harmony singing. Some earnest percussion and astute use of handclaps add to the overall impact of an album which, despite – or maybe because of – its apparent simplicity strikes well-aimed and far-reaching blows to our perceptions about traditional song.

„Champion“, „Seven Gypsies“, „By The River“ und „Who Knows“ sind bisher meine Lieblinge neben „Common Ground“.

Hold on Magnolia to that great highway moonSehr schön beschrieben Deine ersten Eindrücke!

Hold on Magnolia to that great highway moonEntschuldige zuerst meine sehr späte Antwort.
