Ska’d For Life – Two-Tone revival & beyond
Reggae continued to evolve throughout the 1970s, with artists like Bob Marley and the Wailers enjoying major chart success, particularly in the UK, while the more underground sounds of roots reggae also had a sizable following.
There was thus little time or inclination to look backwards to previous sounds such as ska yet this was to change in the late 70s thanks to the small UK independent record label Two-Ton. Established by Jerry Dammers and his multi- cultural Coventry based band, The Specials, acts from the label pushed ska back in the British charts with their energetic, post- punk, take. The initial Two-Ton inspired ska bounce began to fade after a couple of years, but its legacy is that ska is perhaps more widely-known now than it ever was in the 60s. Subsequent surges of interest in Japan, Europe and the US means that these days, new generations of young people re-invent ska for their own times.
CD3 collects together the best of the tracks from the ska revival.
