ROCKPALAST is a legendary ‘live’ music TV show hosted in Germany by the WDR channel. It first broadcast in 1974 and has become a pan-European television institution. It has its own fan club and online forum, and in almost four decades, it has become a trademark of quality viewing and listening.
Snowy White is one of the UK’s most acclaimed and accomplished guitarists. His stellar career includes appearances and recordings with major artists as diverse as Pink Floyd, Al Stewart, Cockney Rebel, Cliff Richard, and Thin Lizzy amongst many others. He has also been a successful solo artist in his own right since the mid-1980s. Previously on Rockpalast with Irish hard rockers Thin Lizzy in 1981, here he returns in 2007 as front man with his White Flames Band, whose recording career began in 1996. The tight backing band of talented Dutch musicians Juan Van Emmerloot (drums) and Walter Latupeirissa (bass), together with the seasoned Jeff Beck/Chris Rea sideman Max Middleton (keyboards), provide the perfect backing for Snowy’s distinctive fretwork. Highlights include title track of his 1996 album ‘No Faith Required‘, and the encore ‘I Loved Another Woman’ – Snowy’s tribute to legendary Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green, his mentor and key influence.
We augment this with a show from 11 years earlier. This was originally played as a three-piece at the ‘Crossroads – Blues & More’ Blues Fest, Leverkusen, in 1996 – the year the first White Flames band album ‘No Faith Required’ was released. However, the show was not broadcast, so this newly restored, rough cut version is a collectable bonus feature. A highlight of the 1996 festival performance is the opener, another Peter Green song, ‘Looking For Somebody’.
Expertly restored and remastered. Superb vision, outstanding sound. The best in the business!

Having made his name with Gong, Steve Hillage has been active for more than 40 years as a performer, composer and producer. He has just returned to ‘live’ performance with a new incarnation of the Steve Hillage Band, revisiting classic material from the mid-1970s.
We feature his 1977 performance on Rockpalast, majoring on highlights from his first two solo albums, ‘Fish Rising’ and ‘L’.
The seven-piece band line-up also appeared on the acclaimed ‘Live Herald’ set, and includes ex-Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and the appropriately named Colin Bass (later of Camel).
Highlights include ‘Solar Musick Suite’ – still regarded by many as one of the finest examples of Hillage’s solo work – and versions of George Harrison’s ‘It’s All Too Much’ and Donovan’s ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’.
By 1980 Steve Hillage withdrew from performing and recording, moving instead into production (Simple Minds, It Bites, the Charlatans, Tony Banks and others), so this is a rare document of his early solo years.
Expertly restored and remastered. Superb vision, outstanding sound.

Anm.: die Aufnahme gab es, ich glaube in 2010 über „Gonzo“ (?), schon einmal als CD/DVD-Combo. Inwieweit Unterschiede bestehen, vermag ich derzeit noch nicht zu sagen.

Gibt es Pläne zur Veröffentlichung der Auftritte von Patti Smith, Peter Gabriel, Graham Parker, Jack Bruce und The Undertones? Die würden mich echt interessieren … denn Cassettenmittschnitte sind keine dauerhafte Lösung.

Das war sogar eine der ersten Rockpalast-VÖs in der ersten Tranche 2005. Dafür, dass die Shows damals schon über 25 Jahre her waren, ist die Qualität großartig.

Als nächstes werde ich mir Roger Chapman zulegen.Wunderbares Konzert, weil ich ihn in dieser Phase (Hyenas-Album) am liebsten mochte. Da war nicht nur Blues.
