Bertrand Gastaut/Dark Tree RecordsSo, here we go… Dark Tree Records is very proud to announce the release (mid/late April) of a previously unpublished live performance of the legendary BOBBY BRADFORD/JOHN CARTER QUINTET (featuring Stanley Carter & Roberto Miranda on double basses and William Jeffrey on drums), recorded in Pasadena on November 17, 1975.
„NO U TURN“ is the first and only recording by this quintet and the earliest extant recording of Bobby & John live in performance.
Also, this shows that window of about 5 years when John was using soprano & clarinet equally.
And most importantly, for historians this recording fills a void in Bobby Bradford & John Carter’s discography. If you were not in Los Angeles throughout the 70s, this is the first time you’ll hear what they were doing during those years!
This release will include a 16 pages booklet with great liner notes by Mark Weber as well as many rare and previously unpublished photos by Jak Kilby, Gérard Rouy and Mark Weber.

Carmell Jones Quartet: Previously Unreleased Los Angeles Session

BAR CODE: –In August 1960, 24-year old trumpet player Carmell Jones left his Kansas City home-town and hopped a bus to Los Angeles, intent on hitting the West Coast jazz scene. There, his impact was immediate and would prove to be memorable. He was quickly part of a quartet with pianist Forrest Westbrook, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Bill Schwemmer.
They rehearsed at Westbrook’s apartment at 2021 Sta. Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, where this unreleased material was recorded at the end of that month. It was an amazing session, in which Carmell, oozing confidence and assertiveness, demonstrated a fresh, virile and imaginative style, with a warm ballad tone and an authoritatively implacable swing at up tempo. The highly responsive rhythm section locked right on him all the way, and also revealed Forrest Westbrook as a highly talented and sensitive pianist, with an advanced concept of improvisation, and a built-in propensity for swinging hard. Along with the pungently powerful Peacock and the driving Schwemmer, they provided an ideally vigorous support for Carmell Jones, who, unbelievably soon, would come to be regarded as among the finest trumpeters on the West Coast. These never before released recordings, his first on the Coast, show why.

von dem, was ich kenne, eine ziemlich tolle kompilation, die auch experimentelle sachen versammelt. einiges ist bisher unveröffentlicht. krog hat ja klugerweise die rechte an ihren aufnahmen alle gekauft und wartet gute angebote von labels ab. schön die geschichte zu ihrer aufnahme von coltranes „psalm“:

ist sicher ein guter Einstieg (es gab Anfang der 2000er eine Kompilaton mit dem Titel „Raindrops, Raindrops“ auf den Crippled Dick Label, welche ähnlich zusammengsetellt war) – für den „hardcore“ Krog Fan nur wegen der unveröffentlichten Titel von Interesse …. da es ja offenbar unveröffenlichtes Material gibt (woh auch genung für eine ganze CD ….), fühlt man sich als erzwungener Wiederkäufer – wie nicht selten – ver …scht :doh: ….

ja, das stimmt. anderes ist unterschiedlich schwer zu bekommen. „break of day in molde“ (ist eigentlich „ida lupino“) gab es als single, aber jetzt sehe ich, dass es auch als bonus track auf der cd von JOY drauf ist. zwei stücke sind aus DIFFERENT DAYS, DIFFERENT WAYS, das es meines wissens momentan nur digital gibt. aber streng genommen gehört das nicht in diesen thread, entschuldigung.
