Mulatto Radio…is nothing less than one man’s attempt to reimagine the whole history of jazz (and every other music he’s ever heard). It’s an exhaustive and exhausting collection of pieces intended to evoke different facets of the jazz past, embellished by the musicians based on what they bring to the party. Over the course its four discs (and he says he has another three in the can), Lowe creates a Burroughsian cutup of the jazz tradition, juxtaposing century-old two-beat rhythms with whirlwind, post-bop solos, or playing modern, Monkian melodies with Creole band instrumentation, including the best use of the banjo on a modern jazz record since Vernon Reid picked one up in Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society (and Ray Suhy’s playing bebop on the axe).

There’s lots of great playing here from a large cast; particular standouts include Suhy (a guitarist to be reckoned with, who demonstrates that monster chops and gut-level expression are not mutually exclusive), protean pianist Lewis Porter (who performs solo as well as in ensembles), titanic AACM tenorman Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (who appears on a half dozen tracks — his last recorded performances), clarinetist Ken Peplowski, tubist Christopher Meeder, and the leader himself, whose encyclopedic knowledge of jazz style comes to the fore and whose vocalized, bop-inflected tone hardly sounds like the work of an academic. It’s really a composer’s record (imagine if Duke Ellington was Jewish, trapped in a New England backwater, and unable to play except in the recording studio), and while Lowe provides copious notes explicating each piece, the music stands on its own merit, rewarding in-depth exploration.

Peter Broetzmann / John Edwards / Steve Noble – The Worse The Better (Roku001)
Roscoe Mitchell / Tony Marsh / John Edwards – Improvisations (Roku006)
Mats Gustafsson & Thurston Moore – Vi Är Alla Guds Slavar (Roku007)

Katherine Miller. Mastered by Andrew Tulloch, London, July 26, 2013. Liner notes:
Kevin Whitehead. Cover art: Christine Reifenberger. Graphic design: Jonas Schoder.
Produced by Tom Rainey and Intakt Records, Patrik Landolt

On the second CD on Intakt Records with his own band Tom Rainey surprises with standards like Dave Brubeck’s «In Your Own Sweet Way», Thelonious Monk’s «Reflections», Duke Ellington’s «Prelude to a Kiss».
Tom Rainey has played in bands with Tim Berne and Craig Taborn, and his own trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Mary Halvorson. For this new ensemble he chose some of the finest players New York has to offer.
Kevin Whitehead writes in the liner notes: «Within those forms, it’s all fluid: density, dynamics, the focus shifting from one player to another, without the others getting out of the way, exactly. The players are pretty scrupulous about minding those forms. Melodic variation is the heart of their method – they acknowledge the changes, but are very much playing the tune not just the frame, making five-way counterpoint coherent. Think of the collective improvisations as multiple obbligatos, responses to a silent theme.»

Sie spielen bekannte Jazztunes wie «Just in Times», «You Don’t Know What Love Is», Dave Brubeck’s «In Your Own Sweet Way», Thelonious Monks «Reflections» und Duke Ellington’s «Prelude to a Kiss».

Mutations is Vijay Iyer’s first album as a leader for ECM, and a recording that will widen perceptions of the pianist-composer’s work. At its centre is “Mutations I-X”, a composition scored for string quartet, piano, and electronics. A major piece built out of cells and fragments, it veers through many atmospheres, from moment to moment propulsive, enveloping, lyrical, luminescent, and strangely beautiful. Through thematic interactivity, the interweaving of acoustic and electronic sound-textures, and some decisive improvisational interventions in notated music, Vijay Iyer has created a multi-faceted suite whose very subject is change. Iyer gives a positive value to the concept of ‘mutation’ in this music, and variously appears in it as an interpreter of notated elements, as an improviser, and as “a sort of laptop artist, mixing in noise and different sounds,” encouraging the transformative processes: The suite is framed by three solo statements: „Spellbound and Sacrosanct, Cowrie Shells and the Shimmering Sea”, a solo piano reading of one of Iyer’s early compositions, and “Vuln, Part 2″ and „When We’re Gone“, pieces created in summer 2013. The newer compositions put the piano in counterpoint with electronically generated rhythms and textures which extend the aura of the suite, making the arc of the whole album a journey over changing terrain.
