Delicious flavours of country-rock, folk and bluegrass in James Walbourne’s The Hill.
    (Rating: * * * *)

This twentysomething Londoner has quickly built up an enviable profile as a guitar-slinging gun-for-hire, popping up in the Pretenders and – impressively, for his tender age – also in Jerry Lee Lewis’s band.

Surprisingly, his own debut album is a proper singer-songwriter job, not an exercise in exhibitionist fretwork, with delicious flavours of country-rock, folk and bluegrass, and topped off with Walbourne’s often Liam Gallagher-esque yowl.

Can you help me find those wide open plains of the West?/ Where you only survive if you’re the best/ Like I’ve heard about in all those songs/ And I’d like to know where the train whistles away so lonesome/ Where the women taste like wine and the birds sing/ Like I’ve heard about in all those songs/ It wouldn’t matter to me/ I’m as happy as I could be underneath an English tree with nobody bothering me/ The home of the BBC
