Die ist in der Tat sehr gut. Und da ist auch ‚The end of the rainbow‘ drauf.

The new-folk banner has been waving long enough to prove that it’s not a fad, so it’s safe for labels to start releasing anything that even remotely falls into the trad category. Don’t be too quick dismiss that pissed-up jackass dancing a folky jig towards you from the pub bathroom, warbling a pastoral ditty with his fly down– the world is always on the hunt for the next D. Banhart or J. Newsom. For the masters who have been around since the first harvest, however, it’s time to bring on the dancing box sets!

The long-awaited Richard Thompson box set, RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson, will be released on February 6 by the folk (sorry) at Free Read, lords of all things good and pure. Refreshingly, the box doesn’t reek of some sordid cash-in. The man often cited as the greatest living guitarist (UK version) is long overdue for a killer collection of oddities, covers, unreleased tracks, and fearless live shakedowns.

RT shows all sides of Thompson in his acoustic and electric guises– founding member of Fairport Convention, inventive solo artist, and collaborator, dazzling guitarist, and wonderfully wry lyricist. It includes a copious amount of live performances, alternate versions, and unexpected covers. (Britney Spears?! Plastic Bertrand?!)

Sound exhaustive? Hell yes it is! The five-disc box was created with the cooperation of Thompson himself, who provided rarities from his private collection, as well as the help of RT collectors throughout the world. It includes a 168-page full-color book with detailed track notes.

Let it blow ist sicherlich eines der besten Songs von 05. Daumen hoch!

Wer Richard Thompson liebt, der wird sich an den Dutzenden von Videos auf You Tube erfreuen können. Fantastische Versionen von „A Man in Need“, „Waltzing for Dreamers“, „Shoot out the lights“, „1952 Vincent Black Lightning“ und vielen mehr. Dazu die gesamte BBC-Dokumentation „Solitary Life“. Wunderbar!

Am 17. August erscheint in Deutschland ein 4-CD Set, das Richard Thompsons Karriere von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart widmet. Es enthält fast keine unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen, bietet aber einen sehr guten Überblick über sein Schaffen.

Man müsste sehr in die Details gehen, um daran viel zu kritisieren. Beispielsweise finde ich, dass „Mirror Blue“ über- und „Mock Tudor“ unterrepräsentiert ist (6 Tracks – 3 Tracks). Von Front Parlour Ballads hat man nicht einmal „Let It Blow“ aufgenommen, womit dieses Album auf den ersten Blick das einzige ist, das auf dieser Box nicht vertreten ist. Aber das sind Kleinigkeiten, im Vergleich zu entscheidenden Frage: Für wen ist diese Box? Es ist bereits das dritte Richard Thompson-Box-Set. Hardcore-Fans brauchen es nicht, weil sie das meiste oder alles besitzen dürften (sogar ich besitze 90% des Inhalts) und Neueinsteiger dürften sich am Preis stören, obwohl der mit 40 Euro relativ günstig ist.

Vega4Eine Raritätenbox hätte viel mehr Reiz… Schade!

Es gibt ja zwei! „Watching The Dark“ ist ein exzellentes 3-CD Set, das viele Raritäten enthält, nämlich andere Mixe, Liveaufnahmen und Outtakes.

Und dann gibt es „RT – The Life And Times Of Richard Thompson“ ein 5-CD Set bestehend ausschließlich aus Raritäten und Unveröffentlichtem, aber angeblich auch von sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität.
