Back at the Beacon: Cowboys, Crow and Clapton Covers

The Allman Brothers Band nodded to two very different eras of its storied career last night at New York’s Beacon Theatre. As has been custom this run, the first part of the group’s show was guest-free, as the Brothers ran through “Don’t Want You No More,” “It’s Not My Cross To Bear,” “Trouble No More,” “Rocking Horse,” “Soulshine,” “You Don’t Love Me” and Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes’ new instrumental, “Orfeo.” Cowboy guitarists Tommy Talton and Scott Boyer then emerged with Levon Helm Band keyboardist Brian Mitchell for a selection of songs from their repertoire like “Please Be With Me,” “All My Friends” and “The Got Song.” Like the Allman Brothers Band, Cowboy recorded for Capricorn in the early 1970s, and the group’s members frequently backed Gregg Allman on the road. Duane Allman also appears on the studio recording of Cowboy’s “Please Be With Me,” a song later covered by another Allman associate—Eric Clapton.

The Allman Brothers then looked back on the 1990s by inviting former tourmate Sheryl Crow out at the start of its second set. Crow spent time with the Allmans as part of the 1994 H.O.R.D.E. tour and frequently joined the group onstage throughout that collaborative run. Last night, she emerged with Mitchell for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Takes Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry,” “Midnight Rider” and another song associated with Clapton, Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” The Allmans then charged into “Statesboro Blues,” “Ain’t Wastin‘ Time No More” and “Hoochie Coochie Man,” before inviting Boyer and Mitchell back out for a rough rendition of The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” “Black Hearted Woman” and a version of “One Way Out” that featured Talton and Mitchell closed out the night.

The band will return to the Beacon this Thursday with another mix of special guests.
