newkIch kenne Von Freeman ja ehrlich gesagt auch nicht. Wenn ich jetzt was von Gene Ammons lese, werde ich ehrlich gesagt etwas skeptisch. Geht seine Musik denn sehr in die Soul Jazz Richtung?
Überhaupt nicht… aber das ist bei Ammons ja auch allerhöchstens die halbe Wahrheit*. Es geht um die Chicagoer Tenor-Tradition, in der Vonski eine Vaterfigur ist, wie Ammons eine war. Freeman hat auch – eins unter der ersten Handvoll Alben – ein Album mit Willis Jackson gemacht, das ziemlich gut ist, aber er war auch offen für die Ideen der AACM, hat auf einer frühen Single von Andrew Hill und davor noch mit Sun Ra gespielt… denke John Gilmore, Clifford Jordan… sein Ton ist wohl das herausragende Charakteristikum. Er ist nicht schön, aber er ist reich. Und was er damit anstellt ist für mich endlos faszinierend. Keiner, der grossen Gesten zugetan ist, aber einer, der im Kleinen sehr viele vermeintliche Gewissheiten aufbricht.
*) und was hat Johnny Griffin genau mit Soul Jazz zu tun? Griffin hat genug Soul für uns alle… aber mit Soul Jazz verbinde ich seine Musik nur am Rande.

Ich würd eher „Serenade and Blues“ zuoberst hinsetzen… aber die beiden sind zusammen wohl seine besten.
