eines der schönsten Alben des Jahres 2005 und „The engine driver“ ist mein absoluter Song-Favorit des gesamten Jahrgangs. Sehr guter Gesamteindruck: ****1/2

PS: der letzte Song ist nicht about angels and angels, sondern handelt u.a. von „angels in your angles“, was ich mal als „Engel in deinem Blickfeld“ deute (???)

PS 2: die Verbindung zu „Arcade Fire“ bekomme ich nicht hin. Mit denen bin ich auch nicht warm geworden.

Habe mir das Album gekauft, weil mir The Sporting Life gut gefallen hat – leider hält der Rest des Albums nicht das, was eben dieser Titel verspricht. Wobei ich gar nicht genau sagen kann, was mich an dem Album stört – das zu sehr Gewollte, das teilweise Manierierte, das Theaterhafte (stimmt, dieser Ausdruck trifft es wohl am besten)? Wahrscheinlich eine Mischung aus allem. Wird wohl in meinem Regal verstauben.

Das ist tatsächlich genau der Song, der irgendwie rausfällt aus dem Album. Ich glaube, wenn einem der Rest des Albums gefällt, wird einem The Sporting Life nicht unbedingt gefallen – und umgekehrt. So wie bei mir. Ist wie immer Geschmackssache.

Sehe ich fast genauso. „The Sporting Life“ wollte mir nie gefallen, holprig triffts ganz gut, pipe-bowl.
Dann hab ich Sporting Life aber live gehört und fands ganz toll. Natürlich fragte ich mich: Warum gefällts mir nie auf der Platte?
Lösung: Unglückliches Tracklisting. Zwischen den sehr melancholischen Titeln „Eli, The Barrow Boy“ und „The Bagman’s Gambit“ passt die fröhliche Melodie (nicht der Text) von „The Sporting Life“ einfach nicht. Vielleicht passt sie sogar garnicht aufs Album… wäre eine schöne non-album-single geworden.

Gesamtwertung: knappe ****

Weiß immer noch nicht so recht, was ich von der Platte eigentlich halten soll.
Im US Rolling Stone stand in der Plattenkritik von David Fricke: „… „Picaresque“ is a triumph of theatrical imagination.“ Dieser Hang zum Opulenten ist mir dann doch manchmal zu viel.

Die Produktion von Chris Walla empfinde ich als zu dicht, viel zu stark komprimiert, teilweise regelrecht erdrückend. Etwas mehr Weite und Luftigkeit hätte den Songs definitiv nicht geschadet.
