Ich bin ein Arbeiter der Liebe, ich habe immer VollbeschäftigungHabe mal ein bisschen recherchiert, was die Spät Byrds ausser dem wohlbekannten Gram Parsons noch so machten.
Der grossartige Gittarist Clarence White starb leider sehr jung – er wurde 1973 von einer betrunkenen Automobilistin überfahren. Er war nur noch kurz zurück bei seiner Stamm- und Familienband Kentucky Colonels. Vor den Byrds war er auch gemeinsam mit Gene Parsons bei Nashville West gewesen.
Skip Battin starb vor einigen Jahren an Alzheimer, er war mit Gene Parsons später auch mal noch bei den Flying Burrito Brothers. Ausserdem gibts von Battin auch noch Soloalben (erste namens Skip) und er war Mitte der Siebziger auch noch bei einer anderen Countryband dabei, den New Riders of the Purple Sage. Von Gene Parsons erschienen ebenfalls drei Soloalben. (erste namens kindling)
John Guerin blieb nach den Byrds ein sehr gefragter Drummer, gemäss mehreren Quellen einer der meist-aufgenommenen, er widmete sich vor allem Jazz(rock) und Filmsoundtracks. Er starb 2004.
Was John York, Kevin Kelley (starb 2002) und Joe Lala so trieben nach den Byrds, ist zumindest im Internet nur in geringem Masse ausfindig zu machen. Von Kelley und Lala sind wohl die Alben, auf denen sie vor den Byrds aktiv waren eher aufzutreiben. (Kelley: Rising Sons; Lala: The Blues Image, Manassas) Von York gibt es aktuelle Alben. Yorks Wege kreuzten sich auch immer wieder mit dem von Gene Clark, als dieser noch lebte.

Leider wohl ohne Beteiligung von Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman und David Crosby, dafür aber mit Gene Parsons und John York, was den Fokus auch auf Clarence White lenken sollte. Insgesamt scheint es eine (die erste) durchaus sehenswerte Byrds-Dokumentation zu sein.
Byrds FlyghtWith 3 hours and 13 minutes dedicated to The Byrds, it allows some people who were involved with the Byrds (including ex-members John York and Gene Parsons) to express their points of view for the first time on such a release.
Five minutes into watching, and already incredible exerpts from live performances by The New Christy Minstrels with Gene Clark!
We’ve spent the last 3 and a half hours viewing these DVDs, and there’s no other thing like that for true Byrds fans. It goes deep into details of all eras of the band’s career.

Clarence White ForumI can only confirm that it’s the most complete Byrds documentary I’ve seen so far.
Although there’s no McGuinn participation at all, there are a few Crosby and Hillman interview parts, probably taken from other past interviews. The John York and Gene Parsons comments are a goldmine, as they never had the opportunity to speak out like this before. In some way, it’s even better than it would have been with McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby participating. They would have told the same stories that we’ve heard a thousand times before anyway.
Then Byron Berline, Jerry Cole, Vern Gosdin, and much Van Dyke Parks.
A must-have (or at least a must-see).
Clarence White ForumOverall I thought it was pretty fascinating; not that there was any earth-shattering new material covered, but the way it was done gave at least 4-5 different views of each album, and quite a bit of opinion as to the influence of each member. Michael Clark is hardly mentioned, which honestly is appropriate from an „influence“ standpoint, neither being a writer, singer, nor revolutionary drummer (to say he least). Hillman isn’t really much of the story until they get to Younger Than Yesterday, which is very perceptive since that’s where he started to blossom. Gram Parsons is noted as important, but not God-like, which is welcome break from his usual „on a pedestal“ treatment – but I did like how almost all the reviewers saw „Hickory Wind“ as a song that’s become a „standard“.
McGuinn is the „glue“ of the whole thing, but not put forth as the biggest influence (although his 12-string is noted as absolutely critical to the band’s start). A lot of the band’s strengths are discussed, and the focus is on Gene Clark, David Crosby, and Clarence and how critical each was in his own way to the band’s direction and success. There was also some interesting focus on the Gene/Skip combination and how strong those two were as a unit; how it really changed the „power“ structure of the band, especially live.
The lack of interviews from former members other than Gene and John (the Hillman stuff is from the Parsons bio film; not sure where the Crosby takes are from) and producers/engineers are, to me, a good thing – because if they were all interviewed it would be an „authorized“ bio, and all the critical analysis would be turned into oatmeal, resulting in a rah-rah film.

Wäre Parsons nicht dieser furchtbare Unfall widerfahren, dann hätten wir mit Sicherheit eine hervorragende Solo-LP erlebt.
4 Stücke hierzu waren bereits eingespielt, „Never ending love“, „Last thing on my mind“, „Alabama Jubilee“ und „Why you been gone so long“.
Die noch nicht ganz kompletten Aufnahmen entstanden am 28.und 29.6.1973 und wurden mit Herb Pedersen, Byron Berline, Lee Sklar, Roger Bush, Ed Green, Roland White und Ry Cooder eingespielt.Erschienen sind die 4 Stücke 1980 auf dem Sampler „Silver Meteor“ auf SIERRA RECORDS (SRS-8706)
Man kann hier bereits erahnen, welch ein Superalbum hier entstanden wäre.Skip Battin brachte es meines Wissens auf 3 Soloalben, „Skip Battin“ auf Signpost (1972 erschienen), „Navigator“ (1981 auf APPALOOSA) und „Don’t go“ (1984 auf APPALOOSA).
Soweit mir bekannt, ist lediglich das erste Album auf CD veröffentlicht.Gene Parsons hat bis dato 5 Platten eingespielt,

The ByrdsFrom their earliest days as 12-string-wielding folk-rockers, to the thrilling psychedelic excursions of their raga-rock period to their 1968 birthing of country-rock, the Byrds were always accorded a hero’s welcome in England. What better place to record founding Byrds member/guitarist/singer Roger McGuinn’s new version of the band—featuring fretboard ace Clarence White, bassist Skip Battin and drummer Gene Parsons—than London’s Royal Albert Hall! Rescued from a tape that had sat forgotten in McGuinn’s climatized garage for decades, this stellar 1971 set, featuring live versions of the current band’s studio faves (“Lover of the Bayou,” “Chestnut Mare”) as well as adventurous reworkings of Byrds classics (“Mr. Tambourine Man,” “My Back Pages,” “Eight Miles High,” “So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”) might be the most accurate and stirring live performance yet of the legendary Los Angeles combo. UncutPreviously unreleased archive material from The Byrds is shortly to surface for the first time. A recording of the group’s 1971 appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall – featuring a line up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons – is to be released in June by Sundazed.
Founder member Roger McGuinn has told uncut.co.uk that the recording came from his private collection – and that more releases of a similar kind would probably follow it.
“We’ve carried these tapes around for 30-something years,” he said. “We just never paid much attention to them. [Sundazed’s] Bob Irwin came down, and he’s a genius at discerning these things. He could look at a box, and go ‘Oh, this is that, and so-and-so was there, this is wonderful.’”
Irwin has taken further tapes from McGuinn, with a view to further releases. “He’s gonna check them out,” said Roger. “There are tentative plans to put out good things we find, but I’m not sure what.”
Though McGuinn’s archive has yielded some delights, Irwin’s investigations have provided one minor disappointment.
Says McGuinn: “He thought he had the only existing recording of the Byrds doing “Milestones” because it said so on the tape box. But when he got it up to his studio and played it back, the track wasn’t there….”
