Robert Wyatt Conducts Comicopera With Eno, Weller
Also with Roxy Music’s Phil ManzaneraPsych rock’s favorite Santa Claus, Robert Wyatt, returns this fall with his latest longplayer, the self-produced Comicopera. It’s the former Soft Machinist’s first disc for Domino Records, as previously reported, and it comes down chimneys a little prematurely this year, on September 24.
Wyatt enlisted a few jolly elves for this one, including longtime pals and past Wyatt album contributors Brian Eno, Paul Weller (The Jam, the Style Council), and Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, Quiet Sun). Also onboard were several noted jazz musicians, Robert’s wife Alfie Benge, and something the liner notes call the „enotron,“ which apparently refers to the voice of Brian Eno as manipulated by Robert Wyatt. I so totally want an enotron for Christmas this year.
Like any good opera, Comicopera is divided into three „acts,“ laid across one compact disc/slab of vinyl/iTunes playlist. On the LP’s third act, Wyatt delves into the poetry and music of Federico García Lorca, Italian rockers CCCP, and Cuban composer Carlos Puebla. Comicopera’s opening track, meanwhile, is a cover of a tune by Norwegian singer-songwriter Anja Garbarek.
Comicopera follows up Wyatt’s 2003 LP Cuckooland, and next time you get the Trivial Pursuit card that asks, „Who wrote the press release for Robert Wyatt’s Comicopera?“ you’ll get your damn pie piece, because it’s Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. According to Taylor, „There is so much to find, and to return to, in the generous company of this record.“

"Fackel" - Karl KrausSicherlich hat nicht alles geglänzt auf Cuckooland, sie war ja auch mit 75 min Laufzeit doppelt so lang wie die meisten früheren Alben. Dennoch mochte ich sie sehr, einige Highlights v.a. auf der ersten Seite wie der wunderbare Einsteiger „Just A Bit“ oder „Old Europe“. Auch „Forest“ find ich klasse… [jezt hab ich Lust bekommen und muss sie gleich mal hören, vielleicht dann mehr]

Robert Wyatt’s „Comicopera“
2007-06-07 10:37:54I’ve been promising to write about this Robert Wyatt album for quite a while now, I’m aware. But it’s been hard to blog about this one. Not because of any problems with the music – it’s wonderful, actually. The problem I’m finding is that listening to „Comicopera“ is a kind of immersive experience, so much so that it’s hard to come out of it with a critical angle.

You know those photos of jazz musicians from the ’50s and ’60s? Blue Note sleeves, Herman Leonard portraits, the ones where the musician looks away from the lens, absorbed, while a coil of cigarette smoke is caught in low lights? That’s what „Comicopera“ reminds me of. There’s always been a jazz element to Wyatt’s music, of course, but „Comicopera“ goes beyond that, so that it seems imbued with a particular, romantic jazz atmosphere: a somnambulent fug, maybe.
Following the pattern of „Cuckooland“ from a few years back, Wyatt (I assume it’s him, anyway: I have no credits right now) is playing more and more trumpet, allowing his horn to pick up the high notes that he can no longer quite reach. One of the many charms of „Comicopera“ is how his trumpet and voice seep into one another, both gracefully disintegrated instruments. On the title track and in many other places, Wyatt hums wordlessly over a crepuscular ambient hum, and it can be hard to tell when he’s playing and when he’s singing.
This is the prevailing vibe. Drums are brushed indolently, and some earlyish Miles Davis sides have clearly been worn out over the years. „Do Us A Favour“ feels like a primitive, Anglicised response to „So What?“, with the perpetually puzzled Wyatt expressing a certain envy for those who have religious faith. „Just As You Are“, meanwhile, is an extraordinarily tender duet (with a singer I can’t place, sorry, though she sounds like a warm Nico, if you can imagine that) about enduring love, clearly intended for Alfreda Benge. Or possibly written by her, come to think of it. I’ll fill in some of these gaps when the credits turn up, I promise.
Occasionally, there’s a break in this enveloping atmosphere. „Beautiful Peace“ begins with Wyatt exclaiming, „Oh look, there’s a dead rabbit; all flat!“, then becomes a warm, ambling strumalong, much more simple and direct than his usual meticulously layered sound. „Something Unbelievable“ is dense and cloudy, but edgier and more dissonant than usual, built around a series of escalating, jolting organ stabs.
By the end, Wyatt pretty much abandons English, with a string of Spanish songs. „Pastafari“ is a lovely and curious piece on, I think, vibes, and finally, „Hasta Siempre“ suggests Wyatt is belatedly auditioning for one of those many empty spots in the Buena Vista Social Club. He’d be a great recruit, of course: how many other British singers have continued such a sympathetic, long and open-minded love affair with the possibilities of song, and can summon up melancholy and enduring passion with such mature guile? This is a beautiful album, and I should listen to it some more.

„Cuckooland“ fand ich großartig (****1/2), „Comicopera“ reicht, nach erstem Höreindruck, leider (noch) nicht ganz an dieses Niveau heran. Mal abwarten.

da freue ich mich aber sehr, gleich mal die cd bestellen…
wyatt ist einer meiner größten lieblinge, alleine seine stimme ist schon einzigartig. cuckooland gefiel mir auch sehr gut. es sind zwar wieder ein paar eher sperrige lieder dabei, aber das reinhören lohnt sich. forest und das hiroshima-lied sind einfach ergreifend (so ein bißchen wie song for the dead che von der ruth is stranger than richard). ich kann mir kaum einen musiker vorstellen, der mit der gleichen würde über diese themen singen könnte. kein bißchen peinlich, einfach ergreifend.

die cd ist ja jetzt erschienen und ich hab sie auch schon frisch ausgepackt.
hab noch nicht genau reinhören können, klingt aber recht gewöhnungsbedürftig, ich meine, da muss ich mich erst mal in ruhe einhören. hat sich bei robert wyatt aber bisher für mich immer gelohnt. also, schaun mer mal…

...falling faintly through the universe...Das „gewöhnungsbedürftig“ kann ich nicht bestätigen – ich fand Comicopera auf Anhieb sehr ansprechend. Ich hab das Album bisher erst einmal hören können. Erste Eindrücke: anrührender Beginn, „Out of the Blue“ großartig und trefflich kombiniert mit „The beautiful War“, „Del Mondo“ und „Cancion de Julieta“ wunderschön – der dritte Teil des Albums hat mir spontan am besten gefallen.
