Paul Weller ringt verzweifelt um Aufmerksamkeit
Zu Punkzeiten verhielten sich The Jam zu Clash und Sex Pistols wie die Kinks zu Stones und Beatles. So ungefähr. Nach der kurzen Zeit des lauten Glücks überraschte Paul Weller, Sänger und Frontmann von The Jam, die Welt mit hedonistisch gepoltem Cappuccino-Pop und einem Hang zu House-Rhythmen, eingespielt von The Style Council. Nun sind wir aber immer noch in den Achtzigern. Seither gerierte sich Weller mal als Gralshüter von Nordlicht-Soul und Rhythm“n“Blues, als Pate des Britpop, als Urgestein der ehrlichen, handgemachten Kiffermusik – offenbar zufrieden mit seinem Ruf als Legende und notorischer Grantler. Tapfer folgt seit zehn Jahren Platte auf Platte und britische Chartsnotierung auf britische Chartsnotierung. Der Rest der Welt bleibt höflich desinteressiert. Mit ‚Wake Up the Nation‘ (Island) wollte Weller seine Musik wieder – nach eigener Auskunft – ‚hart und urban klingen lassen, irgendwie metallisch‘ und damit hocken wir mitten im Getreidekreis des Problemfelds: Popmusik lässt sich nicht absichtlich ‚urban‘ oder ‚hart‘ oder sonstwas machen – sie ist es. Oder eben nicht. Paul Wellers Musik ist – wie seit Jahren – ideenarme Absicht, ist angegammelte Haltung, aber nicht Aussage. Jeder Ton schreit und rudert mit den Armen, um Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen und erntet doch bloß Mitleid (außer in Schlafmütz-upon-Thyme). Der Paul Weller von heute verhält sich zu seinen besten Zeiten wie David Bowie zu Tin Machine. Leider klingt er auch genauso.KARL BRUCKMAIER

Paul Weller reunites with The Jam’s Bruce Foxton at London gig
Modfather plays with ex-bandmate for the first time since 1982
Paul Weller was reunited with his Jam bandmate Bruce Foxton for the first time since 1982 last night (May 25), as the two performed together in London.

Weller, two days into his five-night residency at the capital’s Royal Albert Hall, called the pairing „history in the making“ as he welcomed his old bandmate onto the stage.
The duo – augmented by Weller’s backing band – kicked off their three-song reunion by launching into a vitriolic version of ‚Fast Car/Slow Traffic‘. The recorded version of the track, taken from Weller’s latest album ‚Wake Up The Nation‘, also features Foxton on bass.
“Well, it’s been a while hasn’t it?“ said Foxton afterwards. „Twenty-eight years, I think. Thank you for the wonderful reception!“
Foxton then remained onstage to run though Jam classics ‚The Eton Rifles‘ and ‚The Butterfly Collector‘, before waving to the crowd and exiting to a huge ovation from the audience and a hug from Weller.
Weller played a greatest hits set to the sell-out crowd, including cuts from ‚Wake Up The Nation‘ alongside older classics including ‚Start!‘, ‚The Changingman‘ and ‚Strange Town‘.
The singer – who was celebrating his 52nd birthday yesterday – responded jokily when the crowd sang him ‚Happy Birthday‘, saying, „The only thing I want right now is a cigarette.“

gestern abend war wohl wieder nicht so doll, wie auch schon am montag laut freunden. special guest war richard hawley. wie man uns erzählte, soll noel gallagher heute special guest sein. ich scheine da mit dienstag abend alles richtig gemacht zu haben. am freitags soll es wohl auch noch mal eine überraschung geben.
