THE RAVENLOU REED
For sure Edgar Allen Poe is that most classical of American writers- a writer more peculiarly attuned to our new century’s heartbeat then he ever was to his own. Obsessions, paranoia, willful acts of self destruction surround us constantly. Though we age we still hear the cries of those for whom the attraction to mournful chaos is monumental. I have reread and rewritten Poe to ask the very same questions again,,. „Who Am I“ and „Why am I drawn to do what I should not.“ I have wrestled with this thought innumerable times: the impulse of destructive desire- the desire for self mortification. To my mind Poe is father to William Burroughs and Hubert Selby. I am forever fitting their blood to my melodies. Why do we do what we should not? Why do we love what we cannot have? Why do we have a passion for exactly the wrong thing? What do we mean by „wrong.“ I became enamored of Poe- once again- and when given the opportunity to bring him to life through words and music – text and dance- why I leapt at it- I surged towards it like a Rottweiler chasing a bloody bone- I read and then recited him out loud and for the first time understood „The Tell Tale Heart.“ I dreamt and imagined and then saw the early performance come to life in the Thalia Theater in Germany(who commissioned me to write this) where the thrill of it’s existence only made me hunger even more ardently for it’s American counterpart- it’s final rewrite- the yearning finally fulfilled by the mad presence of Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, Fisher Stevens-the magnificent Elizabeth Ashley, the transcendental Amanda Plummer and castigating Katy Volk of the Wooster Group- musicians magnificent galore- D. Bowie, the gospel glory of the 5 Blind Boys from Alabama , the mind tearing heart rending sax playing of the incredible Ornette Coleman- the ethereal vocals of Antony, a descendent perhaps of Little Jimmy Scott , Jane’s passionate cello- loving arrangement by her of my guitar solo-strings- real strings- Rob Mathias taking my guitar line and building a universe with it-Steve Bernstein’s power melodic horns- all these pieces together forming for me a universe of sound I’d only dreamed of. My fellow artists. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart and reel with happiness at the cd’s existence. My band – Mike, Tony and Fernando, the magnificent production of Hal Willner. Die meiste Zeit geht dadurch verloren, dass man nicht zu Ende denkt. Alfred Herrhausen (1930-89)Gibts hier eigentlich noch irgendwelche Leute, die POEtry im Thalia Theater in HH gesehen haben (habs 4mal gesehen)?? Geschweige denn Lou Reed Fans im RS Forum???

Mensch Jungs, ihr seid ja alle wahnsinnig gesprächig!
also, habe ihn auch 2000 in der Gr. Freiheit gesehn, tolles konzert, hat ua. fast das komplette Ecstasy-Album gespielt. Habe auch den Rockpalast Mitschnitt vom Tag vorher in D’dorf, kann man zwei nette 70 Min. Cds draus machen.
POEtry war unglaublich, wahrscheinlich das beste Theaterstück, was ich je gesehen hab. Das lag aber nicht nur an Lous Musik (die live gespielt wurde, hpts. von Mitgliedern der Band Ougenweide), sondern auch an der Inszenierung Robert Wilsons, der aufwendige, wirklich schöne Bühenbilder erschaffen hat, so zB an unsichtbaren Fäden durch die Luft schwebende Schauspieler.
Dies hier sind die Songs, wie sie im Stück vorkamen: (und woran ich mich noch erinnern kann)These are the stories of Edgar Allen Poe (sehr punkiger Opener)

Who am I (wunderschöne Ballade, grade, wenn sie von einer Frau gesungen wird; Lous Version in concert war nett, aber nicht so brillant)
Guardian Angel (rockiges Schlusstück)uns erwarten also ca. 14 äußerst abwechslungsreiche Songs. Wird n klasse Album!
Zwei Songs der Raven Sessions (Vanishing Act und Guardian Angel) habe ich schon auf einer dubiosen Bootleg CD. Wirklich aufregende Tracks. Aufregender als die Ecstacy-Stücke! Bin gespannt auf „The Raven“!!!!

Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it...Habe in 1996 in Ludwigsburg gesehen. Damals war er mit dem formidablen ‚Set the twilight reeling‘ unterwegs.

Die „Hooky Wooky“ Tour 1996 war die letzte sehr gute Lou Reed Tournee! Mittlerweile wirkt alles etwas abgehangen!
Im Vorprogramm spielten damals „Whipping Boy“, oder?! Gibt´s die eigentlich noch? Ich fand die sehr geil!--
Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it...Whipping Boy waren damals als Vorgruppe angekündigt, spielten dann aber leider doch nicht. Den Namen der Ersatzband habe ich vergessen. Von Whipping Boy habe ich seitdem auch nichts mehr gehört, das Album damals war aber ganz gut.

Es sind Studio Tracks, keine Live-Aufnahmen. Ich habe sie als Filler auf dem „Musicians“ Bootleg, einer Akustik-Live Session vom Februar diesen Jahres.--
