atom  Im Oktober ist mit Meltdown: Live In Mexico (3CD/BD) ein weiteres offizielles Live-Dokument erschienen. Für mich ist es von den sechs Live-Dokumenten des Septetts bzw. Oktetts das Interessanteste.

@kurganrs: In meinen Augen ist die Band in dieser Besetzung auf ihrem Höhepunkt und die Setlest ist nahezu perfekt. „Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind“ ist auf einem ähnlich hohen Niveau, mir ist die neue aber einen kleinen Tick lieber.

So sehe ich das auch. In puncto Ensemblespiel, Sound und Setlist könnte die „Meltdown“ im Vergleich mit den anderen Live-VÖs der letzten paar Jahre vorne liegen. Allerdings sind die auf fast gleichem Niveau.
Verzichten könnte ich am ehesten auf „Live at the Orpheum“ und „Live in Toronto“. Die haben kaum noch irgendein hervorstechendes Alleinstellungsmerkmal.
Aber „Live in Chicago“, „Live in Vienna“, „Radical action (…)“ und die „Meltdown“ möchte ich allesamt keinesfalls mehr missen. Da gibt es auf jedem Album Unverzichtbares für mich. Bei „Radical action“ z.B. die Live-DVDs. Die haben mir schon richtig viel Freude gemacht. Die Crimsons machen es einem wirklich schwer, mal bei einem Album zu pausieren. Gut so, weiter so.

Zumindest “Sweet Dreams” wird er gehabt haben 😅

Es gibt noch weiter Coverversionen, z.B. “Rock you like a hurricane” (Scorpions) oder “Love in an elevator” (Aerosmith) auf YouTube.

Music Is Our Friend – named after the tour from which the performances were taken – is an official bootleg featuring all of King Crimson’s final performance in North America at Washington in September, 2021. 

The 2CD set is completed with four pieces from the first concert of the tour’s second leg in Albany. Taken together, these tracks represent both a beginning and an end of a tour that took place despite almost insurmountable issues. 



Originally scheduled for 2020, postponed for a full year because of the pandemic, the tour began July in Florida as the latest Covid wave hit and the band moved across the country in a tour bus bubble. 

Following a two-week break due to scheduling conflicts, they returned to the road again, with the Zappa Band appearing nightly before Crimson. 

Now facing gigs that had to be moved due to extreme weather, with one venue flooded a day before a concert, an open-air venue in New York transferred to the more familiar Beacon Theatre, and even a band member flown to hospital via helicopter, King Crimson faced a range of challenging conditions. Happily, the band member was fully recovered and no gigs were missed despite the array of setbacks and obstacles. 

By the time King Crimson reached Washington, the band was in ferocious form with a powerful, energetic set with some arrangements reworked and differing from previous tours.

Featuring a restored middle section of ‘Larks’ Tongues In Aspic Part One’ that had not been played since 1973, substantial keyboard arrangements, Tony Levin on upright bass during ‘Neurotica’ giving the piece an extra swing, there’s an emotional set-closer, Starless and an immensely powerful ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ as an encore. 



King Crimson completed their tour in style and to much acclaim from fans and critics alike. As Robert Fripp notes in his diary entry included in the notes: “David (Singleton, KC manager/producer), pointed out that the very first piece KC played in the US, at Godard College, Montpelier, Vermont on October 29th. 1969, was the same piece as completed KC’s 52 years – 21CSM”.



In contrast to the Washington show, the four performances from the ‘Friends and Family’ concert in late August 2021 at The Egg in Albany, opening show of the second leg of the tour and the same venue where the current band played its first US gig in 2014, have a more intimate feel. As befits a small venue/invited audience, the sound and pacing provide an opportunity to hear a run of material not played in Washington due to time constraints. 

Bringing the second disc with a poignant performance of ‘Islands’ – perhaps the best recording of this song by this band, David Singleton, who also prepared all the audio for this release, thought it one of the best sets the band played on this or previous tours.

„Music is our friend“ hat eine Setlist, die jetzt nicht gerade ein Muss für ältere Fans ist, welche die Gigs/Alben der letzten Jahre kennen. Aber was oben in atoms Posting steht, stimmt schon: Es gibt einige veränderte Arragements, Improvisationsteile sowieso, und zudem macht die Band auf dem Album einen spielerisch wirklich quicklebendigen und sehr inspirierten Eindruck. Ich habe massig KC gehört, seitdem sie mit drei Drummern unterwegs sind, und dabei natürlich viele Songs dieses Bootlegs auch sehr oft – aber mir hat es jetzt wieder enorm Spaß gemacht.
Mein Tipp an dich, Sidewinder, wäre auf jeden Fall auch noch die „Meltdown – Live in Mexico“, wenn du diese 3-Drummer-Geschichte magst.

Die habe ich tatsächlich schon! Habe mich in den letzten Wochen bei iTunes eingedeckt, mir fehlen eigentlich nur noch die Studioalben ab „Discipline“ und das eine oder andere Live-Album. Ich finde es erstaunlich wie eine Band mit einer derart wechselnden Besetzung durchgehend so überzeugende Musik raushauen kann, und das noch in diesem Umfang. Abgesehen von „Lizard“ mochte ich bisher jedes Studioalbum und die Live-Dokumente sind noch mal was ganz anderes. War sehr skeptisch als ich das von den 3 Drummern gelesen habe, aber sogar das funktioniert. Bin schon ziemlich beeindruckt von der Musik und auch froh dass ich nach dem holprigen Start noch einmal einen Versuch unternommen habe. Anfangs fand ich ITCOTKC nämlich überhaupt nicht so beeindruckend.

Klammheimlich hat uns Fripp zu Weihnachten mit neuem/alten Material beschenkt, bin gerade aus allen Wolken gefallen als bei iTunes plötzlich ganze 4 (!) Live-Alben aufgetaucht sind.

Es gibt jetzt:
– Earthbound (1972) (Leider ist der Sound hier nicht wirklich befriedigend)
– USA (1975)
– The Great Deceiver Pt. 1
– The Great Deceiver Pt. 2

Vor allem die letzten beiden Veröffentlichungen begeistern mich immens, fast 50 Songs aus der Wetton-Ära. Die Alben gibt es auch bei Spotify.

Die Great Deceiver Box war 1992 eine absolute Sensation, die Zusammenstellung exzellent. Das hatte die sehr kurze Live-LP USA um Längen getoppt, zumal ein großer Fokus auf die improvisierten Stücke gelegt wurde. Bis zu den großen Live-Boxsets hat es ja dann nochmal genauso lange gedauert, bis das gesamte Material dieser Ära veröffentlicht wurde.

Aber leider müssen wir uns zukünftig nur noch mit Archiv-Material begnügen, denn King Crimson haben in Tokyo ihr letztes Konzert gespielt:

Dennoch großen Respekt für diese lange, tolle Zeit!
