Secretly Canadian has announced that it will release a posthumous Jason Molina album on August 7. The album is called Eight Gates and it’s the last collection of solo tracks that the singer-songwriter recorded before his death in 2013. Listen to “Shadow Answers the Wall” from Eight Gates below.
Molina recorded the album in 2008, while he was living in London. According to Secretly Canadian, Molina claimed that he wrote the songs while recovering from a rare spider bite. Molina, who was known for his affinity for tall tales, also claimed that the album’s field recordings of bird noises were from parakeets descended from a pair released by Jimi Hendrix in London in the 1960s.
Molina’s final album was 2012’s Autumn Bird Songs, although some of his earlier work has been reissued in more recent years. In 2017, Rowman & Littlefield published Erin Osmon’s biography Jason Molina: Riding With the Ghost.
