Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded 3CD clamshell box edition of the classic album, “Novella” by RENAISSANCE. Recorded in late 1976, the album featured the epic ‘Can You Hear Me?’ along with the classic tracks ‘Midas Man’, ‘ Touching Once (Is So Hard to Keep)’ and ‘The Sisters’.

Because of record company issues, the album was released in January 1977 in the USA, but appeared in the UK and Europe in August 1977. “Novella” was a top 50 hit album in the USA and the band’s following in the UK grew steadily. To promote the album release in the UK, Renaissance, featuring highly gifted vocalist Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford (acoustic and electric guitars), John Tout (keyboards, vocals), Jon Camp (bass, acoustic & electric guitars, vocals) and Terry Sullivan (drums, percussion), undertook some concerts in Britain with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, culminating with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 14th October 1977. The impressive set list featured material from “Novella”, alongside such classic tracks as ‘Carpet of the Sun’, ‘Mother Russia’, ‘Can You Understand’, ‘Running Hard’, ‘Song of Scheherezade’ and ‘Ashes Are Burning’.

This expanded edition of “Novella” has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and features a previously unreleased promotional single edit of ‘Midas Man’ and a new-to- cd single edit of ‘Can You Hear Me’ along with the entire performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1977. The release also features an illustrated booklet with a new essay.

    STEVE MILLER – „Welcome To The Vault“ (3CD+DVD) [11.10.2019]

The story of The Steve Miller Band presents a group that was always willing to move forward – from their blues roots in the late-’60s, to their slew of smash rock hits in the ’70s, to their explorations into pop and other forms in the decades since. Now, more than 50 years since the band’s inception, The Steve Miller Band have announced an expansive 3-CD/DVD box set of rarities due October 11 entitled Welcome To The Vault.

Welcome To The Vault is the first-ever Steve Miller Band rarities collection and features 52 songs that span Miller’s career, including 38 previously unreleased recordings and 5 never-before-heard songs. With demos, rehearsal takes, newly unearthed compositions, classic concert recordings, and more, Miller has dived into the vaults with a celebratory collection that’s bound to please any fan.  There are alternate takes of classics like “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like An Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” and “Space Cowboy,” alongside gems from their early lineup.  Among them are a 10-minute cover of Little Walter’s “Blues With a Feeling” from San Francisco’s Fillmore West and “Super Shuffle,” recorded at the band’s appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival.  The set also includes a new, big band version of “Take The Money and Run,” recorded with blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan as part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center series.  Blues tunes also abound, including covers of Otis Rush, Robert Johnson, and Willie Dixon.  In an unexpected twist, the blues ace T-Bone Walker is also featured performing his hit “Lollie Lou” in Miller’s living room in 1952.  Rounding out the music is Miller’s own rendition of that tune, recorded at his T-Bone Walker: A Bridge from Blues To Jazz tribute concert.

The DVD is also a veritable treasure trove of rarities, featuring 21 performances. There’s rare footage from Monterey Pop, a concert appearance at Fillmore West from 1970, and a 43-minute concert broadcast from New York’s Palace Theater in 1973.  There’s a collaboration with James Cotton from their 1974 appearance on ABC In Concert, a live rendition of “Abracadabra: from 1982, excerpts from the band’s Austin City Limits appearance in 2011, and footage of Steve Miller performing with his godfather Les Paul in 1990.

The discs are housed in a deluxe box accompanied by a 100-page book that includes photos from Miller’s extensive archive and a 9,000-word essay by David Fricke. Miller has also thrown in guitar picks featuring his iconic Pegasus logo, and even an authentic backstage pass from the vault!

    CHEMICAL BROTHERS – „Surrender“ (3CD+DVD)

The Chemical Brothers are set to release expanded versions of their album 1999 album Surrender, across a number of formats, this autumn.

Surrender was the duo’s third album and their second to reach number one. It featured the singles ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’, ‘Let Forever Be’, ‘Out of Control’ and ‘Music: Response’, as well as a host of top drawer guests such as Noel Gallagher, Bernard Sumner, Bobby Gillespie, Hope Sandoval and Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue.

It’s the first time the Chems have issued a deluxe edition of any of their catalogue, having recently reissued it all on vinyl a couple of years ago.

The 20th anniversary deluxe comes in a number of formats. A 3CD+DVD box set features the original 1999 album with previously unreleased ‘Secret Psychedelic Mixes’ of Surrender album tracks as well as a selection of B-sides and remixes from the period and a DVD of restored promo videos and film of their legendary Glastonbury 2000 performance. This set comes with a 28-page book with new essay by John Savage and four prints by original sleeve artist Kate Gibb.

The 4LP vinyl edition includes the album, the Secret Psychedelic Mixes and a cut down selection from the remixes/B-sides disc and (perhaps surprisingly) it includes the DVD.

There’s also a 2CD deluxe which pairs the album with the remixes/B-sides CD from the four-disc box.

    ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND – “ “Fillmore West ’71” (4CD)

Few bands shaped the sound of what came to be known as southern rock quite like The Allman Brothers Band. As part of the celebrations surrounding their 50th anniversary, Allman Brothers Recording Company and The Orchard have announced a new four-CD collection of unreleased live material called Fillmore West ’71, due for release on September 6.

Recorded just two months before their legendary New York City live album At Fillmore East, the Fillmore West ’71 set collects all the recordings from a weekend run at San Francisco’s Fillmore West in January of 1971, sourced from the original reel-to-reel soundboard masters. It presents the band in their prime with Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks firing on all cylinders with sets that were equal parts loose and intense. The tracks within include fiery and often lengthy versions of some of their most beloved material:  from “Statesboro Blues,” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” to “Midnight Rider,” and a typically incendiary “Whipping Post,” the band delivers the goods across all three nights.

While each night was special, the January 31 show (spread across Discs 2 and 3) was particularly intense, with churning takes on “Hoochie Coochie Man” and a newer jam called “Hot ‘Lanta.” The January 31 show closes with “Whipping Post,” but the label has offered up a thrilling bonus track: a 45-minute workout on “Mountain Jam” recorded at The Warehouse in New Orleans on March 13, 1970.  The press release notes that this particular version has never been released before.

    Disc 1 – 1/29/1971:

    1.Statesboro Blues

    2.Trouble No More

    3.Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’

    4.In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed

    5.Midnight Rider

    6.Dreams
