PET SHOP BOYS – Catalogue: 1985-2012 reissues with ‘Further Listening’ discs

Three of the long anticipated Pet Shop Boys reissues will finally emerge next month as Parlophone reissue multi-disc ‘Further Listening’ editions of the albums Nightlife, Release and Fundamental. These effectively kick off a year of reissues under the ‘Catalogue: 1985-2012’ banner.

All audio is newly re/mastered and both 1999’s Nightlife and 2002’s Release are three-CD sets, with two ‘Further Listening’ discs apiece. Fundamental (from 2006) is a two-disc package, consistent with the original reissues which were put out sixteen long years ago, in 2001.

The approach is broadly consistent with what’s come before. For example, there were over 20 third-party remixes (in total) of the three Nightlife singles issued on CD and 12-inch vinyl back in the day, but none of them are included here. Rather the bonus discs seek to mop up unreleased tracks, B-sides, demos, curiosities and remixes created by Neil and Chris themselves (‘The PSB Extension’). The occasional live track also gets a look in.

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER – „Black Moon“ und „In The Hot Seat“

Not long ago, a revitalized BMG label began to reissue remastered and expanded ELP titles. To date, they’ve moved through Love Beach (which released on May 26 along with both Works volumes). Remaining are the two final studio issues, Black Moon (1992), and In The Hot Seat (1994). both albums failed to make great impact, and were of marginal interest even to long term fans. Nevertheless, both albums were original band issues and, having said that, should be historically respected for the music that was released. Personally, I enjoyed both albums.

Musically, Black Moon, and In The Hot Seat simply were caught in a period of indifference to what was enthusiastically received in the ’70s with Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, the Works volumes, and their great predecessors. The songs found on both were good listens, worthy of their release.

On July 28, BMG rolls out the last of the intended studio reissues with new remastering by Andy Pearce. Both titles will be offered on 2CD sets, HD DD, and 140g-weight vinyl LP.

Black Moon will offer four bonus tracks that will include radio edits of “Black Moon”, “Affairs Of The Heart”, “Paper Blood”, and the cover of Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet”. On CD 2, the newly remastered complete album release of Live At The Royal Albert Hall (1993) will be provided as more bonus.

In The Hot Seat will offer not only the original album remastered, but will include a studio version of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures At An Exhibition”, along with “A Time And A Place”, and Emerson’s “Piano Concerto No. 1: Third Movement”. The second CD will provide twelve remastered live performance tracks including “Hoedown”, “Honky Tonk Train Blues”, “Tiger In The Spotlight”, and a medley of “Fanfare For The Common Man”, “Rondo”, “America”, and 21st Century Schizoid Man”. The album will include a booklet with a track by track commentary written by Greg Lake. (Lake had also contributed liner notes for Black Moon).

    STRAIGHT LINES – „Straight Lines“ (1980) und „Run For Cover“ (1981)

To mark the 25th anniversary of their debut, 3 Loop Music are to reissue British indie/alt-rock band Curve‘s first two albums – Doppelgänger and Cuckoo – as two-CD deluxe editions.

Compiled by Dean Garcia and Toni Halliday, between them these expanded reissues include all manner of remixes, rare and unreleased tracks. Along with the album proper, the two-CD set of 1992’s Doppelgänger (self-produced with Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder) includes all 12 tracks from the band’s three 1991 EPs, the single versions of both Fait Accompli and Horror Head, various B-sides and the rare Aphex Twin remix of Falling Free. Everything has been remastered from the original tapes.

Regarded by the band as their best work and released just 18 months after Doppelgänger in September 1993, Cuckoo again spawned two singles: the Blackerthreetracker EP (where Missing Link was the lead song) and Superblaster.

The new, expanded two-CD set includes all the remixes from the Blackerthreetrackertwo CD single, various B-sides and the original versions of Rising and Half The Time.

Both Doppelganger and Cuckoo will be reissued on 25 August 2017.

    FOCUS – „Hocus Pocus“ (13 CD)

Innovative Dutch rock band Focus see their albums collected in a new and comprehensive 13CD box set called Hocus Pocus Box.

Aside from the very recent Focus 8.5 (issued on their own label in 2016) this new box set collects all ten studio albums from those purveyors of progressive rock/jazz/classical, starting with 1970’s Focus Plays Focus/In And Out Of Focus moving all the way through to 2012’s Focus X.

1973’s live album At The Rainbow is also present and correct, as is 1976’s compilation Ship Of Memories and the 1985 studio album from original members Jan Akkerman and Thijs van Leer, called simply Focus (what else?!).

The final disc is the ’93 compilation The Best Of Focus. This features 16-tracks and includes the US single version of Hocus Pocus. The albums come in card sleeves with original artwork and are housed in what looks like a clamshell style box. This set also comes with a booklet.

Mein Lieblingstrack war damals „She’s A Rounder“.

    LIVE – „Mental Jewelry: 25th Anniversary Edition“

Fans of ’90s alternative staple Live have had a lot to be happy about in the last few months. Late last year, after an acrimonious split, lead singer Ed Kowalczyk returned as lead singer of the band after seven years apart. With tour dates and a new album in the works, the quartet are also taking time to look back, with a newly expanded edition of their first album as Live, 1991’s Mental Jewelry.

After a self-released album and EP under the moniker Public Affection, Live (Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey) signed to Radioactive Records and collaborated with Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison in the producer’s chair. Inspired in part by the teachings of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, Mental Jewelry was an album of unique expression and introspection that resonated with many in search of answers through music. Though it only reached No. 73 on the Billboard 200, lead single “Operation Spirit” cracked the Top 10 of Billboard‘s alternative charts, with follow-up “Pain Lies On the Riverside” reaching No. 25 on that same chart. The album ultimately went platinum, no doubt spurred to some success by the band’s bestselling follow-ups Throwing Copper (1994) and Secret Samadhi (1997), the former of which featured the band’s biggest pop hit, “Lightning Crashes.”

The reissued Mental Jewelry (available as a 2CD set or on vinyl) includes three non-album tracks (including the previously unreleased “Born Branded”), a remix of “Pain Lies on the Riverside” by Hank Shocklee of The Bomb Squad and an unreleased concert from The Roxy in the summer of 1992. The sets are available August 11, less than a week after the band’s appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago.
