September 2013 sees the 30th anniversary (ish) reissues of two Mike Oldfield albums.

1982′s Five Miles Out, which features the single Family Man (covered with great commercial success by Hall and Oates) will be issued as a three disc 2CD+DVD edition, with the DVD featuring a 5.1 surround sound mix.

Oldfield’s follow-up to Five Miles Out was Crises, released little over a year later in May 1983. That album was responsible for another bit hit, this time Moonlight Shadow, which was a top ten hit in many countries around the world and in the UK is well known for being featured on the first of the long running Now That’s What I Call Music series.

Amazon are listing a 5-disc Crises box set, with a release date of 2 September, the same day as Five Miles Out. At this stage there is no official confirmation of exactly what will be on each disc, but the track listings are available on Amazon and Oldfield confirmed to his personal Facebook group earlier this year that Crises will be mixed for 5.1 surround sound. Here’s some of his message from Mike:

I have started putting some automation down and it’s so great to work in 5.1 as there is so much more room for all the sounds in that lovely big space. I was working on Moonlight Shadow 5.1 last night and that’s easy to mix and everything is sounding amazing. The folks at the archiving company are having a bit of trouble finding the old masters of Taurus 3 and Foreign Affair but they have 2 mysterious big reels of Ampex tape in the oven so hopefully those tracks will be found. Shadow on the Wall will be the long version.”

In a later message he added:

“Have had a quick look at Moonlight Shadow and it’s magic you just push the faders up and it sounds fantastic. Found an extra Maggie Reilly vocal take so will have a good look at that.”

All in all exciting news for Mike Oldfield fans! Track listings for both releases are below, although with no official confirmation it may take some educated guessing to establish whether tracks are live versions, demos, 5.1 etc.

    Ergänzung per SecondDisc:

Deep-pocketed Yes fans will want to steel their bank accounts for this one: a brand-new box set, to be released this fall in Japan, newly mastering the prog heroes’ Atlantic/ATCO albums on hybrid SACD.

High Vibration looks to be a typically lavish import, featuring 16 discs of Yes material from 1969 to 1987. The set will feature all of the band’s studio albums from that time period (plus 1973′s live Yessongs), all in replica paper-sleeve packaging, plus a bonus disc of non-LP cuts, nearly all of which appeared on Rhino’s Yes remaster campaign in the early and mid-2000s. (Exception includes a 1991 remix of megahit “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” commissioned to promote the Yesyears box set, and holiday single “Run with the Fox,” which appeared on that same box set.)

The mastering on these discs (both 96/24 SACD mixes and the standard CD masters) were newly created by Isao Kikuchi, who mastered the Yes catalogue on HDCD in Japan in the mid-2000s. Japanese producer Shin Katayama oversaw the package. It’s out September 4 in Japan and available a week later in the U.S..

    Kommt jetzt doch wohl endlich:

The latest sensational release in Omnivore Recordings’ catalogue is a massively-expanded edition of Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore, the 1972 live album and commercial breakthrough by British blues-rockers Humble Pie. This sensational album, taped over two nights at the legendary Fillmore East in the spring of 1971, is now coming out as a four-disc box set featuring all four recorded shows in their entirety.

Humble Pie was the brainchild of Steve Marriott, powerful frontman for The Small Faces, who’d left to pursue other projects in 1969. He very quickly formed Humble Pie with a stunning stable of young talent: drummer Jerry Shirley, a 17-year-old session player for Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label; bassist Greg Ridley, who’d just come off two years with Spooky Tooth; and an 18-year-old Brit known in his native country as the frontman for psych-pop band The Herd but a relative unknown in the rest of the world: Peter Frampton.

Having scored a Top 5 hit that year with “Natural Born Bugie,” Humble Pie would spend 1970 and 1971 attempting to penetrate the American market. That didn’t work much as studio albums and tracks went, but the band’s live act was top-notch. Their two nights at The Fillmore East in May of 1971 featured strong sets, mostly covers of great blues and soul tunes. There was Ida Cox’s “Four Day Creep,” Willie DIxon’s “I’m Ready,” Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah I Love Her So” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” (penned by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson), Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ Stone” and a killer, 23-minute version of Dr. John’s “I Walk on Gilded Splinters.”

Ultimately, Performance made it to Billboard‘s Top 30 in the U.S. – but its success arguably did more favors for Frampton than Humble Pie at large: he left the band before the album was released, and would later release an iconic live album of his own.

This four-disc complete version of Performance features all four Fillmore shows from May 28 and 29, in their original sequences. Much of the original album was sequenced from the second shows on each night – and none of the very first show has ever been released, making this a definite must-buy for fans. Each disc is packed in its own CD wallet, all of which will be housed in a lidded box with new art in the style of the original LP sleeve. Best of all, the shows are newly mixed and mastered, under the supervision of Humble Pie’s surviving members, Shirley and Frampton.

Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore – The Complete Recordings will be available October 29.

Fans of Emerson, Lake & Palmer – not to mention fans of Keith Emerson’s live work with Marc Bonilla and Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes – have got two new sets to look forward to this season.

Shout! Factory will release Live in Montreal 1977 on November 12. Recorded in support of Works Volume 1 – a double album which featured Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer each taking the reins on writing and production on three sides and two lengthy tracks (“Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Pirates”) on the fourth – Live in Montreal 1977 features tracks from all sides of that set, plus a healthy selection of prog-oriented fan favorites from the band’s discography up to that point (“Karn Evil 9,” “Pictures At an Exhibition,” “Nutrocker”). This tour (and possibly this date), which also featured an intricate but costly orchestral accompaniment, has been represented on record before as 1979′s In Concert album, released after the band’s ill-received Love Beach (1978) and subsequent breakup, and by Castle in the U.K. as the double-disc Works Live in 1993.
