If you thought ABBA‘s deluxe reissue series was at an end with the release of The Visitors earlier this year, then think again.

The deluxe editions continue, and this time we go back to 1975, for an expanded edition of the group’s third studio album, simply entitled ABBA. The hit singles featured on the record include Mamma Mia, SOS and I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.

The first disc in this 2-disc package is a CD, which features the original album, plus three bonus tracks. There is nothing new here, since the bonus tracks match what was on the same disc in the 2005 Complete Studio Recordings box set. However everything has been remastered (for at least the fourth time) especially for this release. This is signficant, because previous remasterings have been criticised, but recent deluxe reissues such as Super Trouper and The Visitors have been highly rated, with a more audiophile approach to the sound. It is likely that ABBA will have a remastering approach similar to the the last few reissues.

The format is the same as previous releases, with a single DVD as the extra disc. It looks promising, featuring 60 minutes of previously unreleased television performances, including the complete 1976 television special ABBA In Australia – the export version of the famous The Best Of ABBA special. Six of the 12 songs in the special are performances of tracks from the ABBA album.

In addition, there are three songs from the 1975 television special Made In Sweden – For Export, along with two performances from the BBC archives: SOS on Seaside Special, first broadcast in 1975, and Mamma Mia on Top Of The Pops (1976).

The package also includes a 24-page booklet featuring an extensive essay on the making of the album, for which ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have contributed fresh insights and stories.

ABBA (Deluxe Edition) will be released in November 2012.

These sets look extremely comprehensive with remixes and B-sides from all the various single formats of the era including seven-inch double-packs, ten-inch vinyl and twelve-inch records.

Dr Robert has supplied sleeve notes and the original band demos are said to sound superb, despite being sourced largely from cassette. All commercially issued tracks are remastered from the original master tapes, and the eagle-eyed among may notice the inclusion of the ten-inch remix of Digging Your Scene (originally entitled Digging Your Remix) which only received its CD debut last year on the excellent Phil Harding Club Mixes of the ’80s compilation.

These 2CD sets will be reissued in jewel cases by Cherry Red Records and Limping For A Generation will revert to the correct, original cover design.

To mark the 40th anniversary of their formation in Stockport in 1972, Universal will release a five-disc box set entitled Tenology by 10cc on 19 November 2012.

The box set has been compiled with the involvement of the original band members – Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart – and comprises four CDs (the singles, selected album tracks, the B-sides and rarities) and a DVD (featuring a selection of their promo videos and TV performances on Top Of The Pops, BBC In Concert, See You Sunday and Six Fifty Five Special).

Eric Clapton gained the nickname “Slowhand” from Giorgio Gomelsky in the 1960s, once recalling that the impresario and Yardbirds manager coined it “as a good pun. He kept saying I was a fast player, so he put together the ‘slow handclap’ phrase [when a restless audience claps slowly hoping the performer will arrive onstage] into ‘Slowhand’ as a play on words.” Clapton fully embraced the name in 1977 as the title of his fifth studio album as a solo artist, following stints in the Yardbirds, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and Derek and the Dominos. Recorded for Robert Stigwood’s RSO Records, Slowhand yielded three hit singles and a No. 2 berth on the Billboard 200. One of Clapton’s most beloved albums, Slowhand will receive the super deluxe box set treatment from Polydor on November 26 internationally, and in the U.S. on December 4.

Produced by Glyn Johns, Slowhand was recorded at London’s Olympic Studios in May 1977. Released that November, it became Clapton’s most successful studio album of the decade, and eventually spent 74 weeks on the U.S. albums chart after five weeks at No. 2. “Lay Down Sally,” “Cocaine” and “Wonderful Tonight,” the latter written for Clapton’s then-partner (and ex-Mrs. George Harrison) Pattie Boyd, all became hit singles. Slowhand contained a number of songs written or co-written by Clapton (“Wonderful Tonight,” “Lay Down Sally” with Marcy Levy and George Terry, “Peaches and Diesel” with Albhy Galuten) alongside compositions by J.J. Cale (“Cocaine”), John Martyn (“May You Never”), Don Williams (“We’re All the Way”), and Arthur Crudup (“Mean Old Frisco”). The blend of blues, rock, country and pop was arguably Clapton’s strongest assembly of songs by that point.

Slowhand will be available in five different formats. Both the Super Deluxe Edition (3 CDs, 1 DVD and 1 LP) and Deluxe Edition (2 CDs) feature four session outtakes, three of which are previously unreleased: “Looking at the Rain,” “Alberta”, “Greyhound Bus” and “Stars, Strays and Ashtrays.” Both editions feature selections from Clapton’s Hammersmith Odeon concert, recorded just one week before sessions began for the new album. The complete, 14-track performance of April 27, 1977 is included on the Super Deluxe Edition on two CDs, while 9 highlights appear on one disc of the Deluxe Edition. The Super Deluxe Edition adds the album on audio DVD in high-resolution stereo and surround, and on vinyl. (It remains to be seen whether the surround mix will be a new one or has been derived from the existing SACD.) Slowhand will also be available as a single-disc album-only remaster, a vinyl LP and digital download.

    3-CD/1-DVD/1-LP Super Deluxe Edition:
    • Slowhand remastered from the original Olympic Studios 1/4″ flat analog master tapes, plus four album session outtakes. The unreleased tracks have been newly mixed from the original Olympic Studios 2″ analog masters by Kevin Reeves at Sterling Sound.
    • Complete Live at Hammersmith Odeon, recorded on April 27, 1977, on 2 CDs. Containing 14 tracks, 10 of which are previously unreleased, Hammersmith Odeon has been newly mixed from the original 2″ analog masters by Reeves.
    • Slowhand remastered in 24/96 Hi-Resolution Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound. (Audio DVD)
    • Slowhand remastered original LP on 180g vinyl.
    • Includes 3 replica tour programs and a new book.

    2-CD Deluxe Edition:
    • Slowhand remastered from the original Olympic Studios 1/4″ flat analog master tapes, plus four album session outtakes. (Identical to CD 1 in the Super Deluxe box set.)
    • Live at the Hammersmith Odeon (Highlights) – 9 tracks, 5 of which are previously unreleased.

    Single CD:
•Slowhand remastered from the original analog masters.

    Vinyl LP:

    Digital Album:
    • Remastered original album plus the four session outtakes.

With the upcoming 40th anniversary edition of Marvin Gaye’s 1972 album currently slated for November 13 release, each one of the Motown legend’s studio albums between 1971’s seminal What’s Going On and 1982’s Midnight Love has been expanded as a 2-CD set. (In the case of What’s Going On, an even more deluxe edition was released in 2011.) Trouble Man, the soundtrack to the 20th Century Fox “blaxploitation” film, turned out to be Gaye’s only excursion into movie scoring. It followed the enormous success of What’s Going On and earned Gaye a No. 12 Pop/No. 3 R&B chart placement, proving that he could hold his own against the other soul stars-turned-film composers such as Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield – as if there was ever any doubt.

A largely instrumental, soul/jazz soundtrack might not have been the most expected move for Gaye in 1972. But after emerging triumphant in his hard-won battle for creative control, and with a hefty contract in tow, Gaye was free to follow his muse. Trouble Man, the film, starred Robert Hooks, whose credits range from A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock on the silver screen. Hooks’ “Mr. T” is a private detective who’s not afraid to take the law into his own hands even as he becomes embroiled in a power play between rival crime lords. Paul Winfield (Sounder, The Terminator) and Ralph Waite (The Waltons) joined Hooks as two of those gangland figures, while Paula Kelly (Sweet Charity, The Andromeda Strain) portrayed T’s love interest. Gaye might have identified with T, crafting much of his score around the character with compositions like “T Plays It Cool,” “T Stands for Trouble,” “Don’t Mess with Mister T” and “There Goes Mister T.” Gaye recorded the Trouble Man album at Motown’s Los Angeles Hitsville West outpost, with his score arranged by such esteemed personnel as Jack Hayes, Leo Shuken and Gene Page.

Critics weren’t kind to the film Trouble Man; in The New York Times, Vincent Canby noted that “it’s not a bad film” but “represents such a peculiar collaboration of interests that it should be of concern to both black and white film sociologists. Also, it dramatizes such a wild confusion of values, I’m not sure it wants to be described as cool or uppity.” Yet Gaye remained rightly proud of his score, which melded funk, jazz, soul and orchestral writing into a seamless and often stunning whole. Hip-o Select’s 2-CD expansion of the 1972 Trouble Man album should go a long way in furthering even a diehard fan’s appreciation of Gaye’s multi-layered score. The remastered original LP will be joined by 29 previously unreleased recordings including alternate takes and for the first time anywhere, the original film soundtrack performances as actually heard in the movie.

Trouble Man: 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition is housed in a digipak which include a generous, 28-page booklet with photo outtakes, rare international picture sleeves, an essay by Dr. Andrew Floray, and track-by-track annotations. Sidebar and additional essays include commentary from film directors Cameron Crowe and George Tillman, Jr., as well as an array of artists including Lenny Kravitz, Joni Mitchell and Christian McBride.

The 2-CD Trouble Man is available for pre-order now at Hip-o Select’s website, with a ship date of November 9. It should arrive at Amazon just a few days later, on November 13.

FlashBackMagazineEric Clapton gained the nickname “Slowhand” …
