newkJa, ich hatte mir sowieso für das neue Jahr vorgenommen mich ausführlicher mit Louis Armstrong (und Duke Ellington) zu beschäftigen. Mal sehen sehen wie sich das mit dem Vorsatz verträgt weniger Geld für Tonträger auszugeben…
Hm, das könnte sich beissen
Die beste Option, viel auf einen Schlag zu kriegen, ist wohl die Masters Box von Universal Frankreich (falls sie noch zu haben ist). Für Komplettisten ist die Frémeaux-Reihe wohl das beste (3CD-Sets, inzwischen ein Dutzend oder so, ich hab bisher fünf davon, hab beschlossen, diesen Weg zu gehen).
Für Klang-Fanatiker vermutlich das JSP-Set für die Hot Fives/Sevens (ich hab das Sony-Set, von dem manche finden, es klinge grässlich, andere bevorzugen es gegenüber dem JSP-Set, ist mir egal, kann gut mit dem Sony-Set leben), aber womit man dann am besten fortfahren könnte, weiss ich nicht … jedenfalls würde ich unbedingt die Finger lassen vom neuen Sony 10CD-Set, das nicht nur die Hot Fives sondern auch die späteren Sony-Aufnahmen (Okeh, Brunswick, Vocalion, whatever) abdeckt, denn man behauptet zwar was von neuen Remasterings, hat aber die alten Achtziger-CDs recyclet, und die klingen anscheinend zielich traurig … mehr dazu findet sich irgendwo auf Org, wo auch Ricky Riccardi vom Satchmo-Museum das alles bestätigt. Mein Exemplar ging gestern an redbeans … mir reicht es, diese Aufnahmen in der Coltrane-Box („Side Steps“ ist es glaub ich? Ich bring die und die „Interplay“ immer durcheinander) zu hören. Sehr schöne Aufnahmen!

Gleich nochmal das ganze „Mama Wailer“ … ich krieg das Ding irgendwie nicht zu fassen, es mäandert zwischen Pop-Anbiederung, richtig geilen Grooves, space-igen Sounds und fettem Orgeljazz … tolles Album! (Gibt’s derzeit in der „3 CDs für 15€“-Aktion bei Amazon, da hab ich’s her, zusammen mit Joe Farrells „Outback“ und Randy Westons „Blue Moses“, alle aus der CTI-Jubiläumsedition von letztem Jahr.)
