„you can dance to Monk music“ …. gerade entdeckt :sonne:
This might not seem the most likely collaborative pairing, but, in fact, Hancock and Cherry had played together in the pianist’s pre-fusion days (on a fine, free jazz tinged record with members of the Heath family, influenced by Ron Karenga’s Black Nationalist ‘Kawaida’ philosophy). The choice of material also seems somewhat unlikely – Thelonious Monk’s ‘Bemsha Swing’ – but any doubts are soon dispelled. With stalwart Ron Carter on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, Cherry is in buoyant mood, giving Monk a shout-out (“what about Thelonious Monk…he said you can dance to my music…”) and proceeding to play the theme with suggestive smears and to solo in jaunty melodic phrases, supported by Hancock’s bouncy, almost down-home piano. It sounds like the players consciously touching base with older traditions, while throwing more than a dash of showmanship into the mix. “This is what we call a fade-out…we just fade right on out…”

Ron Carters A Quick Sketch ist ziemlich großartig.
Ich mag aber auch all die Funk/Disco Alben, besonders Butterfly. Sind natürlich alles nur erste Eindrücke, bin aber mit der Box rundum zufrieden.

Gibt es aber leider nicht auf CD, oder? Irgendwelche Empfehlungen, was so ähnlich klingt? Also so Proto-Ambient-Jazz with Attitude?
Ähnliches fällt mir leider gerade nicht ein, wenn Du mit „Don Cherry“ aus dem selben Jahr glücklich wirst, kann ich das sehr gut nachvollziehen. Proto-Ambient-Jazz und Musik generell kann man übrigens auch sehr gut auf Schallplatte hören. Ohnehin gibt es viele Veröffentlichungen nur auf dem einen oder dem anderen Medium, daher würde ich grundsätzlich zu Mehrgleisigkeit raten. Von der vergleichslosen Freude des Erlebnisses Vinyl-Schallplatte mal ganz abgesehen.
(Wobei ich zugeben sollte, dass die o.g. Bootleg Platte „Live Köln 1975“ nur mittelmäßig gepreßt wurde, aber trotzdem ganz wundervoll ist.)

Nach Trio und Quartet geht es zurück in die Disco und zwar in die Früh-80er-Disco. Dass er dafür damals Prügel einstecken musste, ist nachvollziehbar. Klingt aber trotzdem gut. Auf Can’t Hide Your Love sang er erstmals ohne Vocoder.
