Septet Frans Elsen featuring Piet Noordijk in Norway hatte ich mich neulich beschwert, dass es nicht genug von Frans Elsen gibt? Bestimmt… und schon kommt was neues auf den Markt, Nederlands Jazzarchief, Funk Jazz von 1970-72… was immer das genau heisst (ich stell mir sowas wie Placebo vor). Neben Elsen (Klavier und wahrscheinlich Fender Rhodes wie auf dem Cover abgebildet) und Piet Noordijk (as, vermutlich) erwaehnt der press release Eddie Engels (tp), Ferdinand Povel (ts), Wim Overgaauw (g), Rob Langereis (b), Victor Kaihatu (b), Eric Ineke (dr) & Wim van der Beek (perc?) … vermutlich nicht alle gleichzeitig, sonst waer es kein Septett … es sind wohl drei Auftritte auf der CD zu hoeren, teilweise auch in Sextettbesetzung… fuer mich vor allem wegen Wim Overgaauw wohl ein Pflichtkauf.Ersuche dann um einen „Bericht“

Kannst Du zufällig was zu den Gillespie- und Poindexter-Platten und besonders zur „Junges Forum 1965“ was sagen @imernst?

Habe die Platte aber nicht mehr. Auf jedenfall ist es eine Wiedeveröffentlichung. Die Dizzy kenne ich nicht. Und ‚Junges Forum 65‘ kannte ich schon als Radiomittschnitt (NDR Jazzworkshop Nr.40). Die Doppel-LP habe ich dann vor ca. 2 Jahren gekauft und die Musik ist immer noch deutlich hörenswert. Ob das Label ins Ausland verkauft kann ich nicht sagen aber Fragen schadet wohl nicht. Ansonsten wüsste ich auch keine andere Quelle für diese Platte. Eventuell hat sie noch Fenn Music in Dassendorf bei Hamburg. Und 25,- Spesen isind natürlich unverschämt. Unter diesen Konditionen wüsste ich auch nicht ob ich sie kaufen würde. Falls du die Musik der ‚Junges Forum 65‘ mal hören willst kann ich dir gerne einen Link schicken. So könntest du dich erstmal reinhören und sehen ob sie für dich überhaupt in Frage käme. Falls du interessiert bist bitte per PM oder am einfachsten gleich an mich privat.

Bheki Mseleku – Beyond the Stars (Tapestry Works TWLP01, 3-sided 2 LP) ist übrigens seit ein paar Wochen nochmal in einer zweiten Pressung von 50 Exemplaren auf Vinyl zu haben – auch die kam gerade, zum Glück ohne Extrakosten. Ist halt doch zu schön, als dass mir der DL reicht! (Das war einer meiner BC Friday-Einkäufe letzte Woche

Offiziell ist davon wohl nichts, aber ist halt immer die Frage, wieviel man davon haben will … die Band ist ja echt gut dokumentiert, besonders in dieser Besetzung.

One of the most prolific composers and performers in the history of jazz, as well as a courageous advocate for African-American empowerment and artistic freedom, Garner is a legend among jazz pianists. His unique approach melds bebop and swing influences into a unique, unrivaled mastery.
Asked to define his musical genius, the late pianist Geri Allen, who was director of the jazz program in Garner’s hometown at the University of Pittsburgh, best captured the essence of Garner’s utterly original vision. “Erroll Garner personifies the joy of fearless virtuosity and exploration. His playing celebrated the greatest swinging big bands through an innovative and impossible pianism,” she explains. “Singular yet all embracing, Garner blurred the line between great art and popular art, and he was a staunch journeyman of the blues and his Pittsburgh legacy.”
In addition to his brilliant keyboard artistry, Garner is also a notable figure in popular music history for the hard-won precedents he set for artistic freedom that still stand today. In 1959, because he had rights of approval on what was released, Garner successfully sued Columbia Records to remove an album they had released without his permission.
His victory was the first of its kind for any American artist in the music industry. Garner and his manager, Martha Glaser, subsequently founded and launched Octave Records, whose 12 releases make up the Octave Remastered Series.
Erroll Garner was a rare musician who was equally adored and respected by peers and devoted fans alike. He and his art were best summed up by the late trumpeter Clark Terry: “The man was complete. He could do it all.”

Thanks to two Seattle saxophonists — the late Joe Brazil, who recorded the Penthouse show, and Steve Griggs, who discovered the tapes 50 years later — a recording of that performance has come to light. On Oct. 8, Impulse! Records will release “A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle,” one of only two known live recordings of Coltrane’s magnificent, spiritually inspired suite. (The other was made in Antibes, France.)
More than a historical find, the new recording is an avant-garde gem that broadens our understanding of an iconic work. It features four new interludes as well as solos by recently added ensemble members Pharoah Sanders (saxophone) and Donald Rafael Garrett (bass), plus — of special historical interest for Seattleites — alto saxophonist Carlos Ward, who sat in. Wilder, more open and more varied than the comparatively sedate original recording, the Penthouse version of “A Love Supreme” also runs more than twice as long.
It is not for the faint of heart. In 1965, Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums) had begun to add new players and explore “free jazz,” which included shrieks, dissonant cries, braying multiphonics (simultaneous notes on a horn), diffuse rhythmic patterns and programs that sometimes went for hours.
“The set I saw seemed almost unbearably long,” recalls drummer Jon Keliehor, a member of the Frantics, a Seattle blues-rock band of the era. “I felt like I could easily have entered some sort of trancelike state.”
Indeed, transcendence was the aim. “A Love Supreme” is Coltrane’s four-part pilgrim’s progress — “Acknowledgment,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance” and “Psalm” — which register his discovery and acceptance of faith (and gratitude for the strength to be able to give up drugs). In Seattle, the four new interludes include a marvelously sinuous bass duet; a smacking solo by Jones with some splendid cymbal work; and a two-part bass solo with some jaunty swing. Another stunning extra is the stuttering, urgently expressive solo on “Resolution” by Ward, who was playing with Brazil in the band that opened for Coltrane.
“Carlos Ward was a standout that night,” says Seattle bassist Pete Leinonen, who also made a point of coming to the club.
Coltrane agreed. After their set, he encouraged Ward to move to New York, where he later played with the successful funk/disco band B.T. Express, as well as Abdullah Ibrahim’s popular octet, Ekaya.
But the real Seattle hero behind “A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle” was Brazil, who not only had the presence of mind to record the show but may well have been the impetus for Coltrane playing the piece at all. Brazil, who moved to Seattle in 1961, had befriended Coltrane while living in Detroit. They shared a mutual interest not only in music but in chanting and Eastern spirituality — in particular, the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita, which they discussed at length while Coltrane was in Seattle. That week, Brazil also booked studio time during the day to record yet another album with Coltrane’s expanded band, “Om,” with Brazil playing wooden flute. It’s not a stretch to credit Brazil with putting Coltrane in the frame of mind that prompted him to revisit “A Love Supreme.”
