Die ewige Poesie des Rebellentums
Bob Dylans «Chronicles. Volume One» in deutscher Übersetzung
Als Sänger und Songwriter ist Bob Dylan längst eine Legende. Auch im ersten, eben auf Deutsch erschienenen Band der «Chronicles», seiner auf drei Bände angelegten Autobiografie, schreibt er sich ein in die Tradition des mythenseligen Amerika.«Das Buch erweckt den Eindruck, er sei eine Figur aus fernen, vergangenen Tagen», schreibt Bob Dylan an einer Stelle über Woody Guthries schon früh bewunderte Autobiografie «Bound for Glory». Dasselbe kann man von «Chronicles» sagen, dem ersten Teil seiner auf drei Bände angelegten Autobiografie. Guthries unverstellte, kolloquiale, zupackend-archaische Diktion scheint hier denn auch seine Spuren hinterlassen zu haben, wo nicht Mark Twain selber den fruchtbaren Acker liefert, auf dem Dylan seine Altvorderen-Prosa anbaut. Und dass er einigermassen bibelfest ist, weiss man ja auch inzwischen. Es spricht für die Arbeit der beiden Übersetzer Kathrin Passig und Gerhard Henschel, die wenig Zeit hatten, dass diese verborgenen Resonanzböden auch im Deutschen noch mitschwingen.
Das fast vergessene Land
Dylan schreibt sich ein in die Tradition, ruft es noch einmal auf: das alte, staubige, mythenselige Amerika, das der einsamen Strassenkreuzungen, an denen Menschen mit einem Gitarrenkoffer stehen, der zugigen Reisen auf Güterwaggons, der alttestamentarischen Moral, der Männer und Helden; das fast vergessene Land, in dem Worte noch Bedeutung hatten. Und obwohl man ja weiss, dass Dylan in den sechziger Jahren dem darniederliegenden Folk-Genre sein originäres Gepräge aufgedrückt, eine ganze Reihe von popmusikalischen All-Time-Standards geschrieben hat und schliesslich von einer ganzen Generation auf den Schild gehoben wurde – als Sprachrohr und Orakel, als Integrationsfigur -, stutzt man beinahe, wenn ein Mao-Poster oder ein John-le-Carré-Buch das Erzählte plötzlich wieder in der modernen Welt situiert. Dylans US-Verlag Simon & Schuster hat schon im Vorfeld einer solchen Lesart Vorschub geleistet. Auf einer uralten Schreibmaschine soll Dylan das Manuskript getippt haben, ganz in Majuskeln – wenn es irgendwie praktikabel gewesen wäre, hätte er es wohl in Stein gehauen. Kleine Randbemerkung: In «Tarantula», Dylans erstem «Buch», einer zusammenhanglosen, surrealen, ganz unlesbaren Kladde mit LSD-Prosa, war noch alles klein geschrieben – von ein paar Namen abgesehen. Vielleicht hat ja auch das etwas zu bedeuten? Die Dylanologen haben da sicher längst eine Theorie.«Chronicles» ist, wie nicht anders zu erwarten, kein geschlossenes, stringent erzähltes Curriculum Vitae. Dylan interessieren nur die Wendepunkte in seinem Leben, die Jahre, in denen die Weichen umgestellt wurden. Er beginnt mit dem Winter 1961/62 im New Yorker Village, wo er nach unzähligen schlecht bezahlten Klub-Gigs bei Columbia vorspielen darf und den lang ersehnten Plattenvertrag unterschreibt. Er springt dann ins Jahr 1968, in dem er sich für eine Weile aus dem Business zurückzuziehen versucht, des Erfolgs und nicht zuletzt der Vereinnahmung durch das Massenpublikum überdrüssig. Ronnie Gilbert von den Weavers hatte kurz zuvor seinen Auftritt beim Newport Folk Festival mit den Worten angekündigt: «Und da ist er . . . greift zu, ihr kennt ihn ja, er gehört euch.»
Das hat er als Menetekel verstanden, durchaus zu Recht. So ist die Öffentlichkeit keineswegs gewillt, seine Flucht ins Private hinzunehmen. Sein Haus in Woodstock wird belagert, er zieht nach New York, aber dort geschieht das Gleiche. Joan Baez schreibt einen Song, in dem sie ihn auffordert, zurückzukehren. Die Presse gibt ebenfalls keine Ruhe. Und dabei ist doch alles ein grosses Missverständnis, so jedenfalls erscheint es ihm dreieinhalb Jahrzehnte später. «Ich hatte sehr wenig mit der Generation gemein, deren Stimme ich sein sollte, ich wusste auch nichts über diese Generation.» Und die brodelnde Tagespolitik, das ideologische Kleinklein ekelt ihn sowieso an. Es ist allein die Poesie des Rebellentums, die ihn zeitlebens affiziert.
In einem weiteren grossen Schritt begibt sich der Autobiograf dann ins Jahr 1987, an den absoluten Tiefpunkt seiner Karriere. Die kreative Potenz scheint versiegt, die eigenen Songs sind ihm fremd geworden, er denkt ans Aufhören und plant, sein Geld gut anzulegen, etwa in einer kleinen Fabrik. Aber nach einer musikalischen Epiphanie – er sieht einen Jazz-Sänger in einem kleinen Klub auftreten, und der ist so bei sich wie Dylan schon lange nicht mehr – gewinnt er nach und nach alles wieder zurück. Zunächst mal erarbeitet er sich eine neue Spieltechnik, mit der er die alten Songs wieder in den Griff bekommt – und man wüsste zu gern, ob diese kryptischen Passagen musiktheoretisch wirklich ernst zu nehmen sind oder ob hier nur wieder Weihrauchschwaden den Blick vernebeln sollen. Anschliessend kehrt auch seine lyrische Kreativität zurück. Wie aus heiterem Himmel kommen ein paar Songs auf ihn, die er etwas später in New Orleans aufnehmen wird – das Album «Oh Mercy».
Das letzte Kapitel ist einmal mehr dem Winter in Greenwich Village gewidmet. In einem langen Exkurs kehrt er jedoch auch zurück in seine Kindheit und Jugend, nach Duluth und Hibbing und nach Minneapolis, wo er sich erstmals professionell als Folk-Interpret verdingt.
Literarische Prätention
Dylan lässt von Anfang an keinen Zweifel an seiner literarischen Prätention. Er versenkt sich in die jeweiligen Milieus, schmückt sie aus mit penibler Sorgfalt, die über das blosse Erinnerungsvermögen weit hinausgeht. Und so gelingt ihm das, was gute Literatur auszeichnet: der Anschein von Authentizität. Er fängt die Atmosphäre der jeweiligen Lokalitäten ein, und die Charaktere sind aus Fleisch und Blut. Besonders warmherzig gerät ihm das Porträt seines musikalischen Ziehvaters Dave Van Ronk, bei dem er auch zeitweilig wohnt. Überhaupt schreibt er mit einer Verve und einem nachgerade religiösen Enthusiasmus über seine prägenden musikalischen Einflüsse, die man dieser alten Sphinx gar nicht zugetraut hätte. Über Woody Guthrie natürlich, den archetypischen Hobo-Barden, über Brechts Seeräuber-Jenny und über den geheimnisvollen Robert Johnson, dessen Gitarrenspiel, Songwriting und vor allem dessen Lyrics die Offenbarung für ihn sind: «Der scharfe Klang der Gitarre konnte schier die Fenster zum Zersplittern bringen. Als Johnson anfing zu singen, hatte ich den Eindruck, dass er in voller Rüstung der Stirn des Zeus entsprungen war. Ich erkannte sofort den Unterschied zwischen Johnson und allen anderen, die ich jemals gehört hatte.»Denn auch das kann man lernen von dieser schönen Autobiografie: Dylan war und ist ein manischer Hörer, ein absoluter Blues- und Folk-Addict. Und es macht Spass, diesen stets hinter der eigenen Maske verborgenen Mann beim Schwärmen zu beobachten.

Wenn wir schon alles falsch machen, dann wenigstens richtig.also ich finde das buch bis jetzt eher langweilig und es wird mir mühe kosten, es fertig zu lesen. bob dylan jammert, wie so meistens.
am anfang ist es ja ganz interessant, er erzählt von seinen anfangstagen, die zeit als er noch nicht bekannt war, in einem schriftstellerisch gekonnten wortfluß. man bekommt dann aber schnell mit, dass er den leser als seelischen mistkübel betrachtet. er jammert, das er noch nicht bekannt ist, und das es schwer für ihn ist, auftritte zu bekommen, da er nicht so recht einzuordnen ist.
in diesen kapiteln schreibt er von recht eigenwilligen kauzen die ihm über den weg laufen und er beschreibt auch die details ihrer wohnungen genau und was sie so an büchern haben. als er dann endlich auftrittsmöglichkeiten hat, passiert ein großer zeitsprung von 10 jahren.
bob dylan läßt den leser an keiner aufnahmesession teilhaben und an keinem konzert, das in den sixties stattfand. er erzählt auch nix davon wie seine songs zustande kamen und auch kaum was von the band. nein, er jammert wieder. nach dem zeitsprung erzählt er die geschichte, wie seine fans sein haus belagern. diese geschichte erzählt er schon seit über 30 jahren. er erklärt in dem buch länge mal breite das er kein prophet ist, das hab ich schon hundertmal gelesen und ich glaube ihm das auch seit über 30 jahren. dass er schweben oder fliegen kann, hab ich mir noch nie gedacht.na ja, viel ist nicht los. jetzt bin ich gerade bei einem gespräch mit bono, wo sie über gott und die welt plaudern. eine der wenigen seiten, wo er von einem prominenten erzählt. sie trinken einen kasten bier und seine frau geht bald schlafen. vielleicht erzählt er das, damit der leser weiß, das er in der gegenwart seiner frau auch einen heben darf, was weiß ich…
mal sehen was noch kommt.

Dann hat er das Buch schlicht nicht für dich geschrieben. Das wird vermutlich vielen Lesern so gehen. Zuklappen, wegstellen und nicht ärgern, nutzt ja nix. :)

also ich finde das buch bis jetzt eher langweilig und es wird mir mühe kosten, es fertig zu lesen. bob dylan jammert, wie so meistens.
am anfang ist es ja ganz interessant, er erzählt von seinen anfangstagen, die zeit als er noch nicht bekannt war, in einem schriftstellerisch gekonnten wortfluß. man bekommt dann aber schnell mit, dass er den leser als seelischen mistkübel betrachtet. er jammert, das er noch nicht bekannt ist, und das es schwer für ihn ist, auftritte zu bekommen, da er nicht so recht einzuordnen ist.
in diesen kapiteln schreibt er von recht eigenwilligen kauzen die ihm über den weg laufen und er beschreibt auch die details ihrer wohnungen genau und was sie so an büchern haben. als er dann endlich auftrittsmöglichkeiten hat, passiert ein großer zeitsprung von 10 jahren.
bob dylan läßt den leser an keiner aufnahmesession teilhaben und an keinem konzert, das in den sixties stattfand. er erzählt auch nix davon wie seine songs zustande kamen und auch kaum was von the band. nein, er jammert wieder. nach dem zeitsprung erzählt er die geschichte, wie seine fans sein haus belagern. diese geschichte erzählt er schon seit über 30 jahren. er erklärt in dem buch länge mal breite das er kein prophet ist, das hab ich schon hundertmal gelesen und ich glaube ihm das auch seit über 30 jahren. dass er schweben oder fliegen kann, hab ich mir noch nie gedacht.na ja, viel ist nicht los. jetzt bin ich gerade bei einem gespräch mit bono, wo sie über gott und die welt plaudern. eine der wenigen seiten, wo er von einem prominenten erzählt. sie trinken einen kasten bier und seine frau geht bald schlafen. vielleicht erzählt er das, damit der leser weiß, das er in der gegenwart seiner frau auch einen heben darf, was weiß ich…
mal sehen was noch kommt.
hab ich ein anderes buch gelesen ?????

Zeitgleich zu meinen Auslässen hier im Forum (siehe eine Seite vorher) habe ich in etwas so auch meiner Frau vorgetragen, als sie mich fragte, ob das Buch denn nichts für mich wäre.
Tja, sie hatte aber, was ich da noch nicht wußte, das Buch schon gekauft. Sie hat es aber nicht umgetauscht, sondern unter den Weihnachtsbaum gelegt. Es war aber auch noch eine Flasche Whisky dabei. Mal schauen, ob ich ihn brauche.Hat wer das Buch schon komplett gelesen?
