ALLISON RUSSELL – Outside ChildAllison Russell kennt man vom Duo Birds of Chicago mit ihrem Partner JT Nero und von Our Native Daughters mit Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah und Leyla McCalla. Outside Child ist ihr erstes Soloalbum und es ist ein Stück Autobiographie: Allison Russell erzählt davon, was sie als Kind und Jugendliche durchgemacht und überlebt hat und was ihr die Kraft dazu gab (teils auf Englisch, teils auf Französisch; sie stammt aus Quebec). Die Kurzfassung: Sie ist mit einer psychisch kranken, überforderten Mutter aufgewachsen und, ab ihrem fünften Lebensjahr, mit einem Adoptivvater, der sie gedemütigt, misshandelt und missbraucht hat; mit 15 ist sie von zu Hause abgehauen und hat auf der Straße gelebt, in Montreal und später in Vancouver, ehe sie eine neue Gemeinschaft gefunden hat. Sie singt davon sehr direkt, aber die Geschichte, die sie mit diesem Album erzählt, ist am Ende eine der Hoffnung, eine Geschichte von Überleben und Stärke. Dazu trägt bei, dass die Musik auf Outside Child eben nicht düster, sperrig oder kaputt ist, sondern ganz im Gegenteil: klangschön, warm und einladend – Musik als Zuflucht und Rettung. Outside Child ist ein melodisches und stimmungsvolles Americana-Album (produziert von Dan Knobler), mit mehr Folk- und Soul-Anteilen als Rock oder Country.
