Hier eine Beschreibung des Pathway Studios, in dem My Aim Is True eingespielt wurde:
„The studio was very small, about 8 x 8 metres with a 2 x 2m control booth in the corner and an upright piano next to it. You could just squeeze three people into the control booth! The tape deck was a Brenell 1 inch 8 track. The monitors and desk were custom made, and they had a pair of Auratones as well, fed from Quad power amps. The desk was quite small, pushed hard against the front wall with the custom monitors hung above and the Auratones on the meter bridge. Outboard was very basic: a Bel delay line, an Alesis digital reverb and Drawmer gates, but they had a nice plate reverb in a cupboard in the office upstairs. I can’t recall all the mics but they were the industry standard stuff. We got big warm sounding mixes and despite the cramped conditions the mixing process seemed effortless compared to the difficult digital learning curve I have been on in the last two years.“

Was die Abmischung des Bandes von My Aim angeht, erhellt die Passage nichts. Ich weiß es auch nicht. Aber, was das Equipment auch kleiner Studios oder billiger Sessions angeht, einiges. Du hattest ja Zweifel, ob teure Technik bei billigen Produktionen zum Einsatz kam.

Ja und vor allem wenn es sich um vergleichsweise neue, unerprobte Technik handelte, bestehen die Zweifel auch immer noch.

Welches wohl kaum bei der Abmischung von My Aim Is True eingesetzt wurde, denn die Firma Alesis gibt es erst seit Anfang der 80er.

Ok. Der zitierte Blick ins Studio datiert also frühestens von 1980. Ob schon bei Aim digitalisiert wurde, wissen wir daher noch immer nicht genau. Jedenfalls wurde digitale 16-Bit-Technik vom Studio offenbar sobald verwendet, wie sie bezahlbar wurde, wenn dem Wikipedia-Eintrag zu Alesis (erste 16-Bit-Geräte für unter 1000 $) Glauben zu schenken ist.
Ich will mich hier gar nicht verkämpfen, mir scheint es jedoch nicht unmöglich, daß bereits bei My Aim Is True digitale Elemente in der Kette waren.

Wohlklang, ein digital Reverb, ist ein digitales Hallgerät, also ein Effektgerät. Das hat nichts mit dem Erhalt der puren, analogen Kette zu tun. Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Marketingabteilung von Mobile Fidelity ein wenig übertrieben hat, als sie „first time ever“ schrieb. Meines Wissens nach war das erste digital gemasterte und aufgenommene Album im UK das Debutalbum von The Beat.

Gut möglich natürlich, daß sie „First time ever“ aus Werbezwecken benutzen.--
noch etwas zu den angekündigten Classic Costello Re-issues:
Beim Tracklisting fällt auf, dass die beiden ersten Alben den UK-Ausgaben entsprechen, während „Armed Forces“ „What’s So Funny ‚bout Peace Love and Understanding“ enthält, wie seinerzeit die US-Ausgabe.

Sundazed is proud to release The Velvet Underground Singles 1966–69, a 7 x 7″ single box set honoring the legendary New York combo’s 7″ vinyl output in their rare mono versions. The set features exact reproductions of Velvet Underground singles, two of them with their original picture sleeves.
