von: Thelonious Monk – The Complete Riverside Recordings (Fantasy, 15 CD, 1986; entnommen von: Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane – The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings; Concord, 2 CD, 2006; der Master Take erschien auf „Monk’s Music“)Zum Ausklang kehren wir noch einmal zur Septett-Session zurück, genauer zum zweiten Abend, bei dem der grössere Teil der Musik des Albums „Monk’s Music“ entstanden ist. Wir hören einen von Orrin Keepnews einige Zeit später zusammengesetzten Take von Monks bezauberndem Stück „Crepuscule with Nellie“, seiner Frau gewidmet und auf „Monk’s Music“ zum ersten Mal zu hören. Am ersten Abend war Monk beim zweiten Take von „Crepuscule“ eingeschlafen, die Session endete mit einem Blues, den die Band ohne Piano aufnahm. Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter, aber nicht gleich mit „Crepuscule“, das über Nacht nicht einfacher geworden war. Take 6 erschien damals auf dem Album, Keepnews stellte dann eine Version aus Takes 4 und 5 zusammen: das Klaviersolo des unvollendeten vierten Takes war das beste – danach verlor Monk wohl etwas das Interesse. Vom folgenden Take wurde der abschliessende Ensemble-Chorus angehängt. Das Spiel Monks ist tatsächlich toll – und dieser ruhige Closer soll auch den Pianisten noch einmal ins Zentrum rücken, nachdem die Show in der Carnegie Hall schon stark von Coltrane geprägt war, wenigstens an der Oberfläche.

Großartig, wie er hier die Zeit dehnt. Und auch großartig, wie auf dieser Aufnahme nach dem bloßen Piano das volle Bläser-Ensemble einsteigt. Und wie knapp das alles gefasst ist.
