    1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Tupelo

    http://www.nickcaveandthebadseeds.com/reissues/the-firstborn-is-dead

    Looka yonder! Looka yonder!
Looka yonder! A big black cloud come!
    A big black cloud come!
O comes to Tupelo. Comes to Tupelo

    Yonder on the horizon
    Yonder on the horizon
    Stopped at the mighty river
Stopped at the mighty river and
    Sucked the damn thing dry
    Tupelo-o-o, O Tupelo
In a valley hides a town called Tupelo

Distant thunder rumble. Distant thunder rumble
    Rumble hungry like the Beast
The Beast it cometh, cometh down
The Beast it cometh, cometh down
    Wo wo wo-o-o
    Tupelo bound. Tupelo-o-o. Yeah Tupelo
The Beast it cometh, Tupelo bound
    ……

The Firstborn Is Dead is the second studio album released by the post-punk band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It was first released in 1985. On this record, singer Nick Cave continued his fascination with the American South, with its references to Elvis Presley and bluesmen like Blind Lemon Jefferson. The photography is by Jutta Heinglein.
The album’s name is a reference to Jesse Garon Presley, the stillborn identical twin of Elvis Presley.
„Tupelo“ is loosely based on the John Lee Hooker song of the same title, which is about a flood in Tupelo, Mississippi (Hooker’s song appears on Original Seeds). Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Cave’s song incorporates imagery of the birth of Elvis and the apocalypse at the second coming of Christ. However, the „Looky, Looky Yonder“ motif that features in the song is derived from a song of the same name recorded by Lead Belly, usually found as part of a medley which Cave himself covered under the title „Black Betty“ on his third album, Kicking Against the Pricks.
    Personnel
    • Nick Cave – Vocals, Harmonica
    • Barry Adamson – Bass, Guitar, Organ, Drums, Backing Vocals
    • Blixa Bargeld – Guitar, Slide Guitar, Piano, Backing Vocals
    • Mick Harvey – Drums, Piano, Guitar, Organ, Bass, Backing Vocals

Ja, Hooker könnte einem auch ohne dieses Wissen tatsächlich in den Sinn kommen, auch wenn Cave es natürlich in seinen Kosmos transferiert.

    2. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Your Funeral My Trial

    http://www.nickcaveandthebadseeds.com/reissues/your-funeral-my-trial

    I am a crooked man
And I’ve walked a crooked mile
    Night, the shameless widow
Doffed her weeds, in a pile
The stars all winked at me
    They shamed a child
    Your funeral, my trial

    A thousand Marys lured me
To feathered beds and fields of clover
    Bird with crooked wing cast
    It’s wicked shadow over
    A bauble moon did mock
    And trinket stars did smile
    Your funeral, my trial

    Here I am, little lamb…
Let all the bells in whoredom ring
All the crooked bitches that she was
    (Mongers of pain)
    Saw the moon
    Become a fang
    Your funeral, my trial
This is Wings of Desire-era Bad Seeds and if you remember “The Carny” nightclub performance scene you’ll remember its strong narrative voice – like theater. Like punk Weill/Brecht. Their cover of Tim Rose’s (of “Hey Joe” fame) “Long Time Man” ranks among the classic covers and “Hard On For Love” is as Grinderman as Grinderman – “I am the fiend hid in her skirts /and it’s as hot as hell in here“. And “Stranger Than Kindness” penned by Anita Lane and Blixa Bargeld is as convincingly strung-out and lonesome as they come.
Nick Cave’s writing is as sharp as a straight razor and his delivery goes from deliriously blasè to biting in a breath. The band is super-tight creating that warehouse of horrors atmosphere and they’re one of my favorite incarnations of the Bad Seeds. And the sound is excellent, something you can’t say for most of the early Bad Seeds LPs. This music jangles, dances (Wim Wenders captures this perfectly), preaches, nods, threatens and seduces all with that angry and dangerous snarled barely contained love/hate growl that appears to be seeping out from Mr. Cave’s psyche once again. Hooray!!
If you’re a fan, you want this record and this pressing.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
    • Nick Cave – vocals (1–8), piano (5, 7, 8), hammond (1, 3, 4, 6), harmonica (1, 2)
    • Mick Harvey – Bass guitar (1, 6–9), guitar (1, 3, 5–8), drums (1, 3, 4, 7, 8), piano (2, 3), organ (2), glockenspiel (2), xylophone (2, 7), backing vocals (6)
    • Blixa Bargeld – guitar (1–9), backing vocals (2)
    • Barry Adamson – bass (3, 5)
    • Thomas Wydler – drums (2, 3, 5, 7, 9)
Your Funeral… My Trial is the fourth studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 3 November 1986 by Mute Records. Your Funeral… My Trial was originally released as a double EP. The album was issued on CD with a different running order and the bonus track „Scum“. During this period in his life, Cave was steeped in heroin addiction, perhaps evidenced by the melancholy, desperate mood of this album.[3][6]
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appeared in the 1987 Wim Wenders film Der Himmel über Berlin, performing „The Carny“ and „From Her to Eternity“. „The Carny“ also inspired the 2004 animated short film Jo Jo in the Stars, which won the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Short Film. The film was created and directed by Marc Craste, who said about „The Carny“: „The lyrics read like a short story, it seemed to suggest a film – a straight visual interpretation of the text…“[7]

    Hallo Thomas.

    4. The Jam – The Modern World

„The Modern World“ was a single released by the British group The Jam on 15 October 1977. Backed by the tracks „Sweet Soul Music“, „Back in My Arms Again“ recorded live at London’s 100 Club on 11 September 1977, it reached #36 in the UK Singles chart. The single version had slightly changed lyrics, replacing the words „I don’t give two fucks about your review“ with „I don’t give a damn about your review“.
It was the only single to be released from the band’s second album: This Is the Modern World.
    Songwriters: WELLER, PAUL JOHN
THE MODERN WORLD – Paul Weller
This is a modern world, this is the modern world.
What kind of a fool do you think I am?
You think I know nothing of the modern world.
All my life has been the same
I’ve learned to live by hate and pain
    It’s my inspiration drive –
I’ve learned more than you’ll ever know
Even at school I feld quite sure
That one day I would be on top
And I’d look down upon the map
The teachers who said I’d be nothing –
This is the modern world, that I’ve learnt about
This is the modern world, we don’t need no one
To tell us what’s right or wrong –
Say what you like, ‚cause I don’t care
I know where I am and going too
    It’s somewhere I won’t preview
Don’t have to explain myself to you
I don’t give two fucks about your review!
