Hatte ich doch glatt dEUS in meiner Liste vergessen. Unverzeihlich, aber korrigiert.
Auf Pete Droge bin ich aufmerksam geworden durch den Soundtrack zu "Beautiful Girls". In der Tat ist "Fourth Of July" ein sehr schöner und gelungener Song, aber insgesamt gibt es zuwenig auf dem Album, dass daran heranreicht. Ich finde die Bewertung deshalb auch nicht streng, sonder beinahe schon zu gut.

Wegen mir nicht, Deine nr.1 halte ich auch für klasse. Sehe ich auch klar vor der "Nevermind". Tolle Atmosphäre. "Dookie" mag ich nicht sonderlich, "The division bell" halte ich für einen gelungene PF-Veröffentlichung mehr allerdings auch nicht. Da gab's vorher schon viel viel bessere Werke. Aber doch, ordentlich. "Definitely maybe" wollte ich eigentlich schon längst geholt haben, bisher noch nicht in den Kosmos von Oasis eingestiegen.

Die Freude galt eigentlich der generellen Nennung des Werkes, das ich zu meinen absoluten Favoriten - unabhängig vom Jahrgang - zähle. Wie aus einem Guss, mit großartiger Atmosphäre und einigen absoluten Meilensteinen ihrer Discography (*****).

Was hälst du denn von seinem Debüt The Devil Made Me Do It? Wenn ich Guerilla Funk in der 94er Liste finde, vermisse ich doch das Debutalbum in der 90er Liste. Paris mochte ich in den 90ern sehr, heute sind nur noch The Devil Made Me Do It (eines der wenigen Rap-Alben, das ich immer noch dann und wann höre) und Guerilla Funk (allerdings auch längst in die 2. Reihe verschwunden) übrig geblieben. Im direkten Vergleich hatte The Devil Made Me Do It für mich immer mehr als eine Nase voraus. Bedrohlicher, ungewöhnlicher, mutiger, cooler, eingängiger.

In meiner Gunst stehen beide so ziemlich punktgenau auf einer Linie. "Devil" **** und "Guerilla" auch ****. In 1990 gabs zwar ebenfalls einige ****er Alben, für das PARIS Debut reichte es dort allerdings konkurrenzbedingt nicht mehr unter die ersten 20 Plätze. 1994 war hingegen etwas dünner, was die Ausbeute anbelangt. Da gehts schon ab Rang #7 mit den ****er Alben los und da blieb dann auch die Nennung von "Guerilla Funk" nicht aus. Ich mag den G-Funk-Style des Albums. Eine überaus knusprige Produktion und PARIS stand ohnehin stets so ein bisschen im Schatten der Großen. Als Texter kann man ihn ja mitunter durchaus etwas grenzwertig einschätzen, seine hypermilitante Haltung erreichte manchmal fragwürdige Dimensionen und war nicht immer frei von Plattitüden. Aber als MC schätzte ich ihn sehr und fand/finde ihn bspw. um Längen besser als Keith "Guru" Elam. Und ich staune gerade, dass du (noch) Alben von ihm hast.

Ich habe eigentlich Ende der 80er und in den 90ern recht viel Rap/Hip Hop gehört, ist aber tatsächlich nicht mehr viel von übrig geblieben. The Devil Made Me Do It wird nie aus dem Regal fliegen, ein ganz großartiges Album auf Augenhöhe mit einigen alten Public Enemy Sachen und ganz sicher eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsalben in diesem Bereich. Heute gibt es zur Feier des Tages vielleicht noch einmal ein Public Enemy Album (auch wenn die sicher nicht besser werden), ab und zu wird ein Klassiker aufgelegt, aber aktuelles findet nicht mehr statt. Die letzten Alben aus diesem Bereich im weitesten Sinne waren wahrscheinlich die ersten Missy Elliott Alben, die mittlerweile auch schon wieder ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel haben.

Diese Alben hatte ich in meiner orthodoxen Hip Hop Phase alle quasi zeitnah auf Vinyl. Wegen "The Main Ingredient" und "Illmatic" tut's mir ein wenig leid, die hätte ich behalten sollen. Mich wundert ja richtig, dass Du und pinch nicht die "Blowout Comb" gelistet habt, denn ich halte sie für sehr gelungen. Die Digable Planets haben bei mir über die Jahre durch den Verzicht von Explicit Lyrics oder sonstiger nastiness sehr gewonnen, weil das der Musik deutlich zugute kam und einfach passte. Tolle Produktion mit vielen kleinen Details und Zitaten (Wild Style u.a.)! Different.

Mit dem slicken Jazz Rap von Digable Planets konnte ich nie etwas anfangen, das war für mich immer nur eine Mischung aus "Mo' Better Blues" und solidem, aber nicht wirklich eigenmächtigem East Coast Hip Hop. Interessant fand ich aus diesem Kreis eigentlich erst das letztjährige Shabazz Palaces-Album.

Mir waren DIGABLE PLANETS immer zu spannungsarm. Nach "Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space)" und der Single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" war ich damals bereits draußen. "Blowout Comb" hab ich nie besessen bzw. nie wirklich aufmerksam gehört.

Wieso hast du dich denn vom "Illmatic"-Vinyl getrennt, THELONICA? Ich habe in den letzten 20 Jahren zwar auch schon so manche Platte dummerweise abgestoßen, aber das NAS Debüt?

Das 2. Album klingt teilweise eher so, als hätten sie (inklusive der Musiker) eine zeitlang an der West Coast gelebt und sehr guten G-Funk gehört, ungewöhnlich. Give it another try.

Jackie Leven auf Platz 6 ist ja mal eine freudige Überraschung. Hätte ich bei dir nicht so weit vorne vermutet. Dafür die beiden unteren Alben viel zu weit hinten. Im übrigen kenne ich gut die Hälfte der Alben in der Liste überhaupt nicht.
